AT THE FOREFRONT OF ATM NETWORKING FORE SYSTEMS INTRODUCES NEW NETWORK
MANAGEMENT CAPABILITIES INCLUDING GRAPHICAL VIRTUAL LAN MANAGER ANNOUNCING
FOREVIEW NETWORK MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE 4.0

Pittsburgh, PA - April 1, 1996 - FORE Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: FORE), a
worldwide leader in networking products based on asynchronous transfer
mode (ATM) technology, today announced a variety of new features and
capabilities supported by a new release of ForeView Network Management
Software. Integrated under the most popular network management platforms
and in stand-alone versions, ForeView is an industry-leading suite of
network management applications providing the richest feature set for
managing multi-vendor ATM networks. Working in conjunction with partners
including Sprint, Northern Telecom (Nortel), and Cabletron, FORE provides
a comprehensive solution for ATM network management from the desktop to
the backbone and across the WAN.

Among the most innovative and valuable new features for ForeView 4.0 is a
graphical user interface (GUI) for the configuration and management of
virtual LANs (VLANs).

VLAN MANAGER FOR SIMPLE VLAN CONFIGURATION

The VLAN Manager enables network managers to easily configure VLANs and
reconfigure them to reflect changing network requirements. Using the VLAN
Manager, users can perform 'drag-and-drop' operations to graphically
specify emulated LANs and the membership of LAN Emulation Clients (LECs)
within those VLANs. The VLAN Manager works in conjunction with the ATM
Forum compliant implementation of LAN Emulation 1.0 (LANE) provided by
ForeThoughtTM Internetworking Software.

"ForeView has always led the pack for providing complete, valuable, and
easy-to-use tool sets for ATM network management," said David Colodny,
FORE's product manager for ForeView Network Management Software. "The VLAN
Manager is a perfect example of an implementation that offers rich
functionality while providing intuitive operation."

The VLAN Manager will be enhanced to include the entire LAN switching
product line, providing comprehensive management of both packet-based and
cell-based VLANs from a single application.

CHANNEL TRACER FOR SIMPLIFIED ROUTE TRACKING AND TROUBLESHOOTING

Previous versions of ForeView provided point-and-click channel tracing
capabilities for virtual circuits. With ForeView 4.0, network managers can
now trace virtual paths as well. ForeView's Channel Tracer may be used for
tasks such as finding the route a particular connection takes through the
network, or gathering statistical data on cell throughput, drops and
rejections at each hop across the ATM network, and greatly aids in
determining which hosts on the network are consuming the most bandwidth.
These capabilities greatly simplify, quicken, and increase the accuracy of
trouble shooting.

COMPLETE FEATURE SET FOR ATM NETWORK MANAGEMENT

ForeView provides the most comprehensive set of features and capabilities
to ease the implementation and maintenance of ATM networks. Some of the
most valuable functions available include:

ATM FORUM UNI 3.0 AUTOMATIC DISCOVERY AND MAPPING FEATURES: - ForeView
automatically discovers and maps any device that supports UNI 3.0. It
provides complete, multilevel views of the ATM network. Through a
hierarchy of topology maps, network managers can monitor and control the
entire ATM network.

CONFIGURATION AND MONITORING FUNCTIONS: - ForeView provides network
managers with the capability to configure ForeRunnerR switches with
easy-to-use menus and a graphical display of the switch on a workstation
or Windows NT PC. ForeView provides remote IP configuration of any
ForeRunner switch or LAN access device, as well as the ability to monitor
adapters, from a single point.

VIRTUAL PATH/CHANNEL TOOL:- This tool provides users with a simple,
graphical means of creating Permanent Virtual Circuits (PVCs), Smart PVCs
(SPVCs), and Permanent Virtual Paths (PVPs).

FOREVIEW INVENTORY APPLICATION:- This feature allows network managers to
create accurate reports of the number and status of all recognized
ATM-attached hardware. The inventory tool provides type of device, current
network addresses, software and hardware revisions, serial numbers, and
node names. Additionally, the inventory application capabilities lay the
foundation for future automated software upgrades.

FOREVIEW GRAPHING AND LOGGING TOOL:- Another useful tool for determining
bandwidth requirements or troubleshooting network problems is the ForeView
Graphing and Logging Tool. ForeView enables users to graph and log a
variety of statistics including transmit and receive cell count to a comma
delimited ASCII file. This information can be exported to any popular
relational database (RDBMS) or application such as a spreadsheet or
modeling tool for additional processing, statistical analysis, and report
generation.

SCRIPTING UTILITY:- This utility enables users to create customized scripts
to automate frequently performed tasks.

FULL ON-LINE HELP:- Although ForeView is straightforward and easy to use,
the complete manual, including over 100 color screen captures from actual
networks, can be found in the on-line ForeView Reference Manual.

BROAD PLATFORM SUPPORT AND STAND-ALONE VERSIONS

ForeView integrates with a variety of standard network management platforms
including HP OpenView on SunOS, HP-UX, and Solaris, SunNet Manager on
SunOS and Solaris, and Cabletron Spectrum. ForeView is also available in
stand-alone versions for SunOS, Solaris, HP-UX, SGI/Irix, and Windows NT.

AVAILABILITY AND PRICE

ForeView 4.0 Network Management Software is available today. (International
prices may be obtained by reaching any of the contacts listed at the
beginning of the release or by contacting FORE's regional sales and
support offices and channel partners around the world.)
