Exide Electronics Introduces Token Ring ConnectUPS Adapter

Bringing Network Managers a New Low-Cost Solution to Monitor Network-Level
UPS

Networld + INTEROP, Las Vegas, NV, APRIL 2, 1996 -- Exide Electronics
Group, Inc. (NASDAQ: XUPS), today introduced the ConnectUPS Adapter for
TCP/IP-based Token Ring networks. This intelligent device adds
communications capability to uninterruptible power systems (UPS)
protecting mission-critical network nodes, such as routers, bridges, and
servers and is a further extension of the company's Strategic Power
Management solutions. Already available for Ethernet networks, ConnectUPS
adapters alert network managers to power problems to ensure maximum
network availability.

"Power to remote network devices protected by a UPS with ConnectUPS
attachments can be managed easily and efficiently from a central
workstation." said Darrick Finan, Exide Electronics Manager of Product
Marketing. "With ConnectUPS, network managers have total access to
critical power information and can be automatically notified to minimize
network downtime."

Customers using third party SNMP-based management software, such as NovellR
ManagewiseTM , NetViewR for AIX, SunNet ManagerTM or HP Open ViewTM, can
use the ConnectUPS Adapter to manage power throughout the network.
Customers also have the option of using OnliNetR power management
software, in conjunction with standard network management software, to
diagnose specific power problems, perform unattended operating system
shutdowns, or schedule shutdowns and restarts for energy conservation.

Network managers can perform basic SNMP functions such as Gets to determine
specific power information (i.e. battery capacity, "input voltage, etc.)
and Sets for implementing advanced network functions such as "automatic
battery test" or "turn UPS off." The ConnectUPS Adapter will also
communicate power conditions, for instance, "UPS on battery" or "utility
power restored," from the UPS through SNMP Traps.

Exide Electronics' PowerMIB and the UPS Standard MIB for SNMP are included
with the ConnectUPS Adapter. Both MIBs provide information about Exide
Electronics' UPSs to the SNMP network management software. Exide
Electronics' PowerMIB contains more detailed alarm information for Exide
Electronics' UPSs. The UPS Standard MIB can be used with the UPSs made by
Exide Electronics and other manufacturers.

ConnectUPS Adapters for Ethernet networks are available now at a list price
of $399. ConnectUPS for Token Ring networks are available now and list at
$849.
