DELL OBSERVES EARTH DAY BY ADDING A FULLY RECYCLABLE CHASSIS TO ITS LINE OF
BUSINESS PCS

AUSTIN, TEXAS, APRIL 22, 1996 -- In observation of Earth Day, Dell Computer
Corporation (Nasdaq:DELL) today announced a new PC chassis with two shades
of green: one for the environment and another for the pocketbooks of its
business and government customers. The new chassis is made of materials
that are 100 percent recyclable and incorporates a new design that makes
the PCs easier to service and upgrade. These enhancements enable Dell's
customers to extend the life of their PCs and reduce the future waste of
discarded computers.

The new Dell OptiFrame chassis will be available worldwide at no additional
charge on future OptiPlex PCs, beginning this summer with a new business
PC based on Intel's powerful Pentium Pro processor. The OptiFrame chassis
was first introduced in 1992 and was considered among the most advanced
designs of its time for the ease with which it could be assembled and
disassembled.

The OptiPlex line is designed for the complex network environments of
business and government customers who represent more than 90 percent of
Dell's business. These customers spend millions of dollars maintaining and
ultimately disposing of computers within EPA guidelines. In addition, the
Gartner Group research firm predicts that nearly 25 million obsolete PCs
will be ready for disposal by the end 1996.

Our industry adds more than 60 million PCs to the market every year. The
question then is what do you do with them when they become obsolete? While
other manufacturers spend time on new colors and cosmetic redesigns that
may be here today and gone tomorrow, Dell is working to address the needs
of its customers to reduce their PC lifecycle costs and help to safeguard
the environment, said Eric Harlsem, senior vice president of Dell product
group. We have added the environmental advantages of this chassis without
adding to the cost of the systems, proving that it can be good business to
be sensitive to the environment.

Sturdy, Recyclable Materials.

With the new OptiFrame chassis, recyclability does not equate to flimsy
materials. The chassis is made of a durable plastic that is free of
coatings or fillers that would normally inhibit their ability to be
recycled. The structure of the chassis is supported with preplated cold
rolled steel, which is designed to support large monitors weighing up to
150 pounds. With a twist of a screw driver, both materials can be quickly
separated and readied for recycling. The plastic is identified and marked
in accordance with international ISO standards, further simplifying the
recycling process, which Gartner estimates can cost corporate customers up
to $600 per PC.

Easy Access - No Keys and No Screws to Lose The new chassis sports a
non-screw, snap-on and snap-off feature that will make it easier to
service and upgrade the PC. This is a welcome innovation for Fortune 500
customers who can spend up to $4,000 annually for technicians to repair,
maintain and upgrade a single PC. The traditional chassis lock has been
replaced with secured looped fasteners that allow customers to select
their choice of locking mechanisms, eliminating the need for users to keep
track of special keys.

Designing and producing systems that can be manufactured, maintained and
disposed of in an environmentally sound manner has been a consistent
priority for many high-tech companies," said Greg Pitts, Environmental
Programs Director at Microelectronics and Computer Technology Corp. (MCC).
"Dell deserves applause for taking bold steps in incorporating
environmental design and management, and especially for demonstrating that
environmentally preferable systems can be cost-effectively manufactured
and brought to market without adding to the cost of their products. Dell's
system demonstrates that good environmental practices are good business."
