BC Hydro Selects Digital to Implement Microsoft Exchange

MAYNARD, Mass., April 2, 1996 -- Digital Equipment Corporation today
announced complete enterprise messaging solutions and integration services
for Microsoft Exchange Server, available immediately using Digital's Intel
and Alpha systems. Microsoft Exchange Server is the messaging server with
integrated groupware that makes it easier to communicate, whether around a
workgroup or around the globe.

DIGITAL SELECTS MICROSOFT EXCHANGE

As part of Digital's commitment to business process excellence, the company
selected Microsoft Exchange. Pilots initiated in August, 1995, in
Digital's Multivendor Customer Services organization validated the
benefits of full-scale implementation, as well as providing the division
with first-hand experience that will be used to assist customers in their
own deployment.

"Digital is internally embracing Microsoft Exchange and Windows NT as the
core technical strategy for group connectivity, including enterprise
messaging. Today, over 3,000 Digital employees from multiple divisions in
five countries are fully operational on Microsoft Exchange," said Dick
Fishburn, CIO at Digital. "Digital is committed to completing the
corporate-wide Microsoft Exchange rollout over the next 12 months, with
the goal to install over 50,000 Microsoft Exchange clients."

MICROSOFT EXCHANGE AND THE ALLIANCE FOR ENTERPRISE COMPUTING

"The Microsoft/Digital Alliance for Enterprise Computing (AEC) delivers
enterprise mail solutions based on Microsoft Exchange to our joint
customers with the speed, safety and completeness they have come to expect
from these two industry leaders working together," said Jim Alchin, senior
vice president of Microsoft's desktop and business systems division.
"Digital's investment in systems integration and services capabilities for
the BackOffice Suite, coupled with its broad Intel and Alpha platform
offerings, position Digital to deliver these solutions."

Robert Bismuth, Digital vice president of the AEC, stated "We will extend
the worldwide reach of Microsoft Exchange through Digital's strengths in
systems, services, networking connectivity and system integration. We are
already seeing extensive customer demand for the combination of Microsoft
Exchange and Digital products and services." A demonstration of this
technology is highlighted in the Microsoft booth at networld+interop '96,
where they are highlighting the robust features of Microsoft Exchange
running on Digital's Intel and Alpha servers.

MICROSOFT USES DIGITAL SERVERS TO DEMONSTRATE MICROSOFT EXCHANGE AT
NETWORLD+INTEROP SHOW

In Bill Gates' keynote today, he showed how Microsoft Exchange Server can
scale from 1,500 (simulated) users to well over 10,000, on a single
Digital server. Digital provided Microsoft with all the client and server
systems including its two award-winning servers, the Digital Prioris ZX
5133 MP Server (Intel) and the Digital AlphaServer 2100, to demonstrate
Microsoft Exchange Server at Networld+Interop '96. Microsoft chose
Digital to partner in their booth "Scalability Wall" demo because of
scalability in the Digital Intel and Alpha product offerings.

CUSTOMER MOMENTUM CONTINUES TO GROW --- BRITISH COLUMBIA HYDRO LATEST TO
SELECT MICROSOFT EXCHANGE ENVIRONMENT WITH DIGITAL ALPHA SERVERS

British Columbia Hydro (BC Hydro), Canada's third largest electric utility,
is beginning an internal pilot program to implement Microsoft Exchange on
Digital's Alpha platform, running Windows NT. Over 4,500 PCs will be
involved in the migration to Exchange Server from IBM, Microsoft, and
Macintosh messaging systems.

"Choosing a vendor for Enterprise Messaging involved an extensive review of
vendors on the market and their respective technical capabilities --
Digital's bid stood out because it understood our technical and business
needs, as well as the context in which the Enterprise Messaging Solutions
(EMS) project has to be delivered, " noted Larry Chow, of the EMS project
at BC Hydro. Chow emphasized that a key factor in selecting Microsoft
Exchange Server was Digital's Multivendor Customer Services division for
service and support. "Digital understands Microsoft Exchange Server
because they have the hands-on experience gained from their installation
of Microsoft Exchange Server in their own corporate environment."

Digital Equipment Corporation is the world's leader in open client/server
solutions from personal computers to integrated worldwide information
systems. Digital's Intel and Alpha platforms, storage, networking,
software and services, together with industry- focused solutions from
business partners, help organizations compete and win in today's global
marketplace.
