SPECTRUM Helps Customers Integrate Management for Switched and Non-Switched
Nets

Offers Industry's Most Complete Approach for Managing Migration to Virtual
Nets

LAS VEGAS - NETWORLD+INTEROP -- APRIL 3, 1996 -- With the introduction of
SecureFast VLAN Manager and VNET Manager -- SPECTRUM extends its reach to
provide integrated management solutions for customers seeking to exploit
the bandwidth advantages of switching across their intranets and other
computing investments. Cabletron Systems' (NYSE:CS) SPECTRUM can now bring
customers policy-based access control of network resources, cost
accounting for network utilization, as well as integrated systems and
network management -- for both the switched and non-switched
environments.

"Cabletron is offering a robust solution which builds on their SecureFast
vision and leading management technology," said John McConnell of
McConnell Consulting. "The VLAN Manager offers a robust virtual LAN
manager on NT while the Virtual Network Manager allows customers to
deliver business value and not just technology management. These products
make the transition from managing just devices to managing key networking
activities that are essential for any organization."

Cabletron is unique among the internetworking vendors in offering customers
a full-service management platform, SPECTRUM Enterprise Manager, which is
now the fastest growing platform in the industry today. While the new
software products - SecureFast VLAN Manager and SecureFast VNET Manager --
will be able to work with other management platforms besides SPECTRUM,
they leverage SPECTRUM's industry-leading technology.

"The announcements today are part of a total management vision that will
allow our customers automated, policy-based control of their full
computing investments -- with increased flexibiliity and dramatic savings
in administrative costs," said Mike Skubisz, Cabletron's director of
product marketing. "None of our competitors can claim this breadth of
vision, or such rich solutions."

This broader vision includes policy-driven management of all types of
networks and computer hardware and software, as well as applications,
databases and business processes -- all from a single console. It will
enable customers to monitor voice, data and multimedia transmissions,
while providing access control for resources such as servers and
applications among both switched and non-switched networks.

Cabletron-developed applications such as Configuration Manager, SPECTRUM
Scheduler, SPECTRUM Policy Manager and Web-based Reporting are among the
features that help to integrate SecureFast management applications within
a broader management context.

When running with SPECTRUM, data from SecureFast VNET Manager will go to
SPECTRUM's Distributed Data Warehouse, where it will provide network
managers with an integrated view of network events. Through this, reports
on network utilization, network alarms, or network business process
dynamics can be produced -- integrating both switched and non-switched
environments. For instance, using SPECTRUM's Web- based reporting tool, an
IS professional can view integrated reports at leisure from remote
locations. Finally, VNET Manager can exploit SPECTRUM's Scheduler for
scheduling automated changes in departmental access to network resources.

In the future, SPECTRUM's Enterprise Configuration Manager will provide
automated configuration support for the switched environment through the
SecureFast Management applications.

Partner applications such as Atrium EMS from Calypso Software Systems,
WinWatch from Metrix, and business process management from Intelligent
Communications Software will help extend many of the policy-based features
for accounting and resource allocation available in SecureFast into the
non-switched environment. Fore System's ForeView coupled with SPECTRUM's
ATM management modules provide customers with integrated management of ATM
switches, access products and network adapters. Seagate's NerveCenter Pro
will offer customers customizable and cross-domain event correlation for
handling alarms driven from emerging technologies and advanced
applications. Finally, problem-solving applications, such as SpectroRX
Resolution Expert, will recommend solutions for complex management tasks
and even automatically resolve routine management problems across the full
breadth of both switched and non-switched environments.

"Cabletron's strategy for managing virtual LANs and virtual networks offers
us the breadth we need to aggressively pursue the bandwidth and
application advantages of new switching technologies," said Phil Thornson,
Network Systems Analyst at University in Minnesota. "Cabletron's
willingness to simply broad network complexity is a welcome addition to
our current networks."

Cabletron Systems is the recognized leader in providing high-performance
intranetworking solutions, including LAN and ATM switches and advanced
network and systems management software. Under its Synthesis product
framework, Cabletron markets products throughout the world for linking and
managing enterprise-wide networks.

With corporate headquarters in Rochester, NH, Cabletron employs over 5,700
people worldwide. Cabletron's common stock is traded over the New York
Stock Exchange under the symbol CS. Over the last four quarters, the
company has reported record revenue of #1.1 billion.
