COMPUTER ASSOCIATES PARTNERS WITH SUNY STONY BROOK TO GIVE STUDENTS
REAL-WORLD SOFTWARE EXPERIENCE

CA Donates Software And Hardware For Two State-Of-The-Art Computer Learning
Laboratories

ISLANDIA, N.Y., March 29, 1996--A partnership between Computer Associates,
the world's leading provider of business software, and the State
University of New York at Stony Brook brings state-of-the-art software
development to the classroom, where students evaluate mission- critical
business solutions. This is an example of how progressive universities are
continually searching innovative ways to bridge the gap between academic
labs and the practical world.

Under the New York State Strategic Partnership for Industrial Resurgence
(SPIR), CA has donated a complete quality assurance learning laboratory
and the software for a transaction and database lab to the Stony Brook
Computer Science Department at the College of Engineering and Applied
Sciences. CA has equipped them with servers, desktop computers, networks
and CA business software. Students taking four new courses will review the
latest updates in CA software along with technology from other industry
leaders. Also, students will have the opportunity to participate in two
vital software research projects.

"Engineering and computer science are enriched with real-world models
because challenges can be oversimplified in the laboratory," said Dr.
Yacov Shamash, dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences,
SUNY at Stony Brook. "CA's real-world challenges, cutting edge
technologies and employee expertise will provide our students with an
industry orientation and sharpen their key skills."

The program establishes a Quality Assurance Lab and a Transaction Lab
provided by Computer Associates. The partnership stems from SPIR, which
pools engineering resources at SUNY campuses in Binghamton, Buffalo, New
Paltz and Stony Brook with support from private industry.

"Many Stony Brook graduates have gone on to professional careers with
Computer Associates," said Mark Combs, CA senior vice president of
research and development. "This program makes Long Island's new computer
scientists even more appealing to the industry by making them more attuned
to market needs and the latest programming techniques. CA, in turn,
benefits through a steady stream of qualified professionals."

"Long Island's strongest business resource has always been its highly
educated population," said Dr. Philip Lewis, Stony Brook Computer Science
department chairman. "By furthering that process, visionary businesses
such as CA will ensure the region's long-term economic vitality and the
leadership potential of its software industry. A strong computer science
department can help benefit the software industry on Long Island,
including CA."

The labs will support four new courses:

 Quality Assurance of Mission-Critical Software,
 Graduate Database Systems,
 Undergraduate Database Systems,
 Transaction Processing.

These key courses will prepare today's students for a wide variety of
professional positions by familiarizing them on the CA-Unicenter systems
and network management solution and CA-OpenIngres information management
solutions, both used by thousands of corporations worldwide. In addition
to the labs, the partnership establishes two major SUNY software research
projects at Stony Brook:

* HIGH PERFORMANCE TRANSACTION PROCESSING-- Developed by Dr. Arthur
Bernstein and Dr. Lewis, the project will develop a new database
concurrency control that will allow databases to process more transactions
per second. CA has donated a source code version of CA-OpenIngres, which
two Ph.D. candidates will update with the concurrency control method as a
means to evaluate the control's performance.

* INTERNET 2000-- Dr. Michael Kifer and a Ph.D. candidate will develop a
language and protocols to support workflow applications over the Internet
using the Jasmine and CA-OpenIngres database.
