Boca Research's H.324 PC card based on Lucent Technologies' AVP chip

BOCA RATON, Fla. -- Boca Research Inc.'s new PC add-on card for dial-up
desktop videoconferencing over ordinary phone lines, being publicly
demonstrated here for the first time, is based on the AVP Video/Audio
Processor chip from Lucent Technologies' Microelectronics Group.

The demonstration of Boca Research's first H.324 standards-compliant
product consists of a live plain old telephone service (POTS) two-way
video call from this week's Global MegaMedia Technology Conference to the
Dallas headquarters of MultiMedia Access Corp., the developer of Boca
Research's desktop videoconferencing system application.

"This product leverages the strengths of all three companies in order to
bring video-telephone technology to the PC user," said Steve Mills, vice
president of business development at Boca Research.

"Industry experts believe that low-cost videoconferencing will be as big a
stocking stuffer this Christmas as CD-ROMs were last year," added Mills.
"Fortunately, Lucent Technologies has the critical components we need
right now to meet our aggressive production schedule. The AVP chip
delivers the quality of the two-way video experience within the
affordability range of the average consumer. With the addition of
Multimedia Access' new dial-up videoconferencing application, we're able
to offer high functionality with a very simple graphical user interface."

The third generation AVP codec (compression/decompression) solution
supports standards-based, two-way real-time videoconferencing over both
analog and digital lines, including analog-to-digital audio signal
conversion and optional high quality echo cancellation for speakerphone
applications which eliminate the need for headphones.

The yet-unnamed PCI card works with all of Boca's V.34 28,800 bps modems,
including the popular V.34 Boca Office Communicator and SoundExpression
28.8 products. Combined with the 32-bit Windows 95 application software,
developed by MultiMedia Access Corp., it can be bundled by PC original
equipment manufacturers or sold as a value-added capability to PentiumR
PCs.
