Coordinate.com Joins with Software.com to Bring StreetTalk to Intranet
Messaging

Enterprise Directory Delivers Fast Look-up and Reduces Costs of Managing
'Net-based Mail

BURLINGTON, MASS. (APRIL 22, 1996) Coordinate.com, the Internet division of
Banyan Systems Inc. (NASDAQ:BNYN), announced today that it is teaming with
Software.com, Inc. to bring enterprise-level directories to the
fast-growing intranet messaging market. Coordinate.com will license
StreetTalk to Software.com, which will integrate the highly regarded
directory technology into its popular Post.Office Internet mail server
software

The first directory-enhanced version of Post.Office will ship later this
year, and will be available from both Software.com and Coordinate.com.
Coordinate.com will provide a complete client/server offering, comprising
Post.Office, StreetTalk and BeyondMail distribution channels, including
Banyan's Enterprise Networking Division. The software will be demonstrated
at the Electronic Messaging Association conference in Anaheim April 28 -
30.

The licensing and joint development agreement will enable intranet users to
seamlessly send and receive Internet mail, using public address books that
dramatically speed the process of finding people and their e-mail
addresses on the corporate network. StreetTalk's full-featured
enterprise-level directory will also streamline management and synchronize
intranet directories enterprise-wide.

StreetTalk's proven scalability and replication capabilities greatly reduce
the burdens placed on intranet messaging administrators and lower the cost
of maintaining global mail networks. Using Post.Office's unique
"fill-in-the-blank" web forms, administrators can manage adds, moves, and
changes of user accounts on users' specific mail servers anywhere in the
corporate intranet from a single location. StreetTalk will automatically
distribute this information to every server in the enterprise.

Software.com will incorporate all of StreetTalk's enterprise directory
capabilities in future versions of its Simple Mail Transport Protocol
(SMTP)-based server software, which it licenses to OEMs, including many
leading Internet mail providers, and sells to end-users. SMTP-based e-mail
clients, including Coordinate.com's BeyondMail, will be able to access
these directories using open Internet directory protocols.

StreetTalk and Post.Office will fully support Lightweight Directory Access
Protocol (LDAP), which is rapidly emerging as the open industry standard
for directory services on the Internet.

Because Post.Office avoids the cumbersome gateways required for most
proprietary e-mail packages to connect to the Internet, it eliminates the
common pitfalls of delayed message transmission, garbled message content
and scrambled return addresses.

"Software.com's recognized strengths and industry-leading alliances have
made it a dominant player in the commercial market for cross-platform
Internet mail servers," said John M. Paul, senior vice president of
Coordinate.com. "By combining our capabilities, we will provide users with
an open intranet messaging solution that's highly scalable and easy to
administer in client/server environments."

FAST LOOK-UP AND EASY ADMINISTRATION

Streamlining administration and improving the ease-of-use of Internet mail
are two critical issues facing large organizations, which are rapidly
embracing the intranet as part of their enterprise network strategies.

Users will be able to find anyone in their corporate intranet by taking
advantage of StreetTalk's rapid name-based type-down capabilities as well
as its ability to rapidly search for users by almost any attribute. Users
will also be able to locate the address of anyone on the corporate
Intranet by typing just the first few letters of the recipient's last
name. StreetTalk attributes let users access groups of colleagues, as
well, such as English speakers in the Paris office.

"StreetTalk remains the directory standard that other vendors try to meet,"
said John MacFarlane, president and CEO of Software.com. "We are very
excited to offer the first native Internet mail server with a directory
service of this caliber. It's a natural pairing of complementary strengths
to solve a very real business need: reliable, scalable and manageable
intranet-based messaging."

LDAP EMERGES AS A STANDARD

LDAP, or Internet RFC1777, is poised to become the pre-dominant standard
for client/server directory services. LDAP offers far more accessible
application programming interfaces than alternative directory APIs and
protocols. Several leading vendors are endorsing it as their standard
protocol for directory services on the Internet.

Coordinate.com will ship intranet client developer toolkits for StreetTalk
this spring, enabling developers to integrate its capabilities with e-mail
clients and other commercial applications. The toolkit will support LDAP
for use with the integrated version of StreetTalk and Post.Office.

TRIED AND TESTED TECHNOLOGIES

StreetTalk is widely recognized for its ability to support WANs with tens
of thousands of users. In many organizations, just a handful of
administrators support an entire StreetTalk-based network because of this
scalable architecture. Integration with Post.Office will let existing
StreetTalk users extend and enhance their networks with intranet messaging
while leveraging their investment in StreetTalk directories and
management.

Post.Office is recognized as the leading commercial-grade implementation of
an SMTP mail server and is used by more than 8,000 organizations, Internet
Service Providers and universities. By eliminating the need for gateways,
Post.Office achieves higher performance levels, including a faster message
transfer rate. It also ensures security for system and mail operations.
Its robust commercial implementation of Internet mail standards gives it a
significant competitive edge over other e-mail offerings that are based on
public domain and often unreliable code.

Post.Office is available on Microsoft Windows NT (Intel and MIPS) and Unix
(Solaris 2, SunOS4) operating systems and incorporates SMTP, Post Office
Protocol (POP3) and Finger servers, with support for several other Unix
and NT platforms under development. Designed for worldwide Internet use,
Post.Office will soon support multiple languages, including those of
Europe and Asia.
