Allied Telesyn Introduces New Fiber ATM/Ethernet Switch

BOTHELL, WASH., APRIL 1, 1996 - Allied Telesyn International today
announced the introduction of the AT-4016F, a 10BASE-FL ATM/Ethernet
access switch. This fiber-based switch, one of the first on the market,
provides direct connectivity between fiber multimode Ethernet LANs and
high-speed ATM networks.

The AT-4016F switch has 16 10BASE-FL ports, offering a dedicated 10Mbps
connection to desktops or servers and a modular 155Mbps, OC-3c/STM-1, ATM
uplink port. The modular port can accept several ATM media options
including multimode fiber, Category 5 unshielded twisted pair or single
mode fiber interfaces. The product provides customizable store-and-forward
as well as cut-through switching capabilities.

LAN Emulation and Virtual LAN Capabilities

Through the ATM interface, the AT-4016F can be connected directly to the
ATM backbone and perform as a LAN Emulation client. To provide efficient
Ethernet-to-ATM communications, the product implements ATM Forum LAN
Emulation 1.0 specifications, assembling Ethernet packets from legacy LANs
into ATM cells which are forwarded across a high-speed ATM network via an
ATM backbone switch. The product also provides integral LAN emulation
client software that interoperates with an external LAN Emulation Service
for address resolution, data forwarding, broadcast, and multicast.

This switch enables network managers to create virtual workgroups of
distributed Ethernet users who can communicate and access resources across
a high-speed ATM backbone network. Using software to create logical as
opposed to physical LANs, switched virtual networking reduces network
management complexity and overall support costs, and provides increased
performance for new high-bandwidth applications. Unlike many of the
competitors' offerings, the VLAN capability can be defined by port or by
MAC address, providing greater virtual LAN flexiblity.

Simplified Network Management

To reduce network management complexity and further increase efficiency,
this switch supports 64 virtual LANs, over 2,048 Ethernet/ATM MAC
addresses, and 1,024 switched virtual circuits. The AT-4016F also supports
802.1 Spanning Tree Protocol, automatically handling loops and redundant
links.

Software upgrades to support the latest ATM-standard capabilities or new
Allied Telesyn product feature releases can be performed easily over the
network using the TFTP protocol or a plug-in PCMCIA Flash memory card on
the front panel of the switch.

The AT-4016F incorporates both Telnet and Simple Network Management
Protocol (SNMP) network management capabilities, giving users the
flexibility to manage networks remotely from a low-cost terminal or a
workstation running SNMP-based network management software, such as HP
OpenView, SunNet Manager, or IBM NetView.

"Allied Telesyn is dedicated to supporting the broadest range of media
types in all our products categories," said Alan Menezes, Product
Marketing Director. "With the introduction of the AT-4016F, we are one of
the first vendors in the market to introduce a fiber-based Ethernet/ATM
access switch."
