Leaders in Learning Technologies and Resources Form Alliance to Bring
Learning Home

CUPERTINO, California--April 2, 1996--Several of the biggest providers of
educational resources today joined forces with Apple Computer, Inc. in an
effort to strengthen the connection between classroom and home learning,
and promote the role of parents in the education of their children. Apple,
the National Geographic Society, the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS),
Scholastic, Inc., and the Computer Learning Foundation announced the Bring
Learning Home Alliance. The Alliance is an outreach program designed to
educate communities about the benefits of technology to children's
learning, and to develop creative ways to help parents and children use
technology together.

The Bring Learning Home Alliance believes that technology can enhance the
quality of education, and help to create an environment where parents and
teachers can become stronger partners in a child's learning. The charter
of the Bring Learning Home Alliance is to identify innovative ways to
bring educators, parents and family members together to develop learning
opportunities for children from preschool through high school; to generate
greater awareness among parents of how their involvement contributes to a
child's learning experience; and foster a collaborative environment among
schools, homes, government and business to extend education beyond the
limits of traditional learning through the use of interactive computer
technology.

"There is no greater investment than the one we make in preparing children
for living and working in a global society. Increasingly, our world is
being shaped by instant access to resources, and the ability to use those
resources in meaningful ways," says Gil Amelio, Apple's chairman and chief
executive officer. "The Bring Learning Home Alliance represents a shared
vision that computer technology is an essential part in expanding learning
beyond the walls of the traditional classroom. It is an important tool for
helping parents become partners with teachers in preparing children for a
competitive work force, and for making positive contributions to our
communities. We are honored that the alliance members joining Apple in
this endeavor are among the nation's most recognized contributors of
resources, materials and services to education today."

ALLIANCE MEMBERS INCLUDE:

The National Geographic Society, the world's largest nonprofit scientific
and educational organization, was founded in 1888 to increase and diffuse
geographic knowledge. Today, in addition to NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC MAGAZINE
and WORLD magazine, it continues to support that mission by providing
teachers and parents with new ways to bring geography, history and science
into the classroom and home.

"The National Geographic Society is pleased to be a part of the Bring
Learning Home Alliance. We share Apple's commitment to education with our
decade-long mission to improve geography education, and to develop
educational technology programs that make learning fun," says Bob Sims,
senior vice president of The National Geographic Society. "Like geographic
literacy, computer literacy has emerged as an essential skill for the next
millennium. The challenges of tomorrow also demand that parents take an
active role in their children's education today. Through the Bring
Learning Home Alliance, parents and children alike can reap the benefits
of today's technology--and learning can become a family affair."

PBS is a private, nonprofit corporation owned and operated by the nation's
345 public television stations. An important community resource, PBS and
its member stations use the power of noncommercial television to enrich
the lives of all Americans through quality programs, and education
services that inform, inspire and delight. PBS is the number one resource
for K-12 classroom programming in the country, and its Adult Learning
Service is the world's largest source of college-level telecourses. Among
its many services is PTV, a Ready to Learn Service on PBS that combines
television programming such as Sesame Street and Barney & Friends with
between- program educational messages and community-based training for
parents and childcare providers to help them use public television as a
teaching tool. PTV, which has interactive elements on PBS ONLINE on the
World Wide Web, is sponsored in part by Apple.

"The Bring Learning Home initiative is a wonderful complement to the PBS
programming watched by more than 95 million Americans every week," says
Ervin S. Duggan, president and chief executive officer of PBS. "PBS and
its member stations provide Americans of all ages- -regardless of their
economic, geographic or social circumstance- -a comprehensive array of
engaging educational programs and services. We are delighted to join this
alliance and to support its mission."

Scholastic, Inc. is committed to producing multimedia resources that tie
directly to the curriculum to enhance the learning experience. Scholastic
offers one of the broadest selections of education software on the market
today through its software and book clubs and technology fairs.

The Computer Learning Foundation is an international nonprofit foundation
dedicated to improving the quality of children's learning and preparation
for the workplace through the use of technology. The Foundation offers a
number of resource materials for parents and educators including software
review guides, parent guides and teaching materials, and videos. It is the
publisher of "Everything You Need to Know (But Were Afraid to Ask Kids)
About the Information Highway," funded by a grant from Apple.

Tom Plati, Director of Libraries and Education Technologies for Wellesley
Public Schools in Wellesley, Mass., says the alliance's emphasis on
families learning together will begin to bridge the gap between home and
schools.

"It's widely accepted in the education community that parent participation
in the learning process greatly enhances the child's experience," says
Plati. "The Bring Learning Home Alliance emphasizes the importance of
reinforcing learning at home, and the role that parents play in guiding
their childrens' experiences. Technology can be used to foster a closer
relationship between education and parents. It's pretty obvious that
children who have this kind of guidance and attention are going to
benefit."

ALLIANCE TO CREATE OUTREACH PROGRAMS

The Bring Learning Home Alliance plans to create new outreach programs and
services, as well as participate in existing programs that meet the goals
of the alliance. Other companies are expected to join the alliance.
Initial programs and services include:

Family Computing Workshops, an expansion of a pilot program launched by
Apple in April 1995, offers interested educators and technical
coordinators the opportunity to host a workshop at their local elementary
school or community center. Parents and children are invited to learn
about the benefits of technology in education by listening to a short
presentation and participating in a hands- on computer technology session.
Beginning this month, the Alliance is sponsoring thousands of workshops
throughout the nation. Each of the participating schools receives a kit
that includes all the materials and guidance needed to put on a free
technology workshop.

The Alliance is developing the Bring Learning Home World Wide Web site,
which will provide information about Alliance activities, programs,
services, general home learning information, and links to each Alliance
member's web site. In addition, the site will provide a channel for
communication and feedback between Alliance members and attendees of the
Family Computing Workshops. The site is expected to be complete this
summer.

The Alliance is providing a Bring Learning Home brochure, called "There's
No Place Like Home...For Learning on a Computer." This guide provides
information on the relationship between technology and learning, use of
the Internet, benefits of home learning, and guidelines to purchasing a
home computer. The free brochure is available by calling (408) 974-6958.
