ADTRAN Announces Industry's First Compressing DDS DSU/CSU for use with
Frame Relay Circuits.

Las Vegas, NV - ADTRAN, Inc. (NASDAQ: ADTN) announced today the DSU III
ARc, the industry's first DDS DSU/CSU with synchronous data compression
designed to optimize throughput over 56 kbps Frame Relay Circuits. The
announcement was made at the Networld+Interop Trade Show in Las Vegas.

The DSU III ARc is based on the recently announced TIA/EIA 655
specification for compression of bit-formatted synchronous data over
point-to-point digital circuits. By incorporating the Frame Relay Forum's
Implementation Agreement FRF.9, the DSU III ARc supports compression over
multiple permanent virtual circuits. Each unit is capable of supporting
compression on up to three PVCs, with an unlimited number of transparent
PVC's supported. The DSU III ARc is also compatible with non-compressing
DSUs for use in existing networks. This feature allow compressing DSUs to
be installed on circuits that require increased throughput while
maintaining overall network interoperability.

According to Gary Culp, design engineer at ADTRAN, the DSU III ARc
automatically selects the DLCIs to compress based on the LMI, Annex A or
Annex D status messages. This feature allows the units to be installed in
new or existing Frame Relay Networks with minimal additional setup or
configuration. A manual mode of configuration is also available to allow
users to select which PVC's to compress.

In addition to the DSU III ARc, ADTRAN also announced Frame Relay support
for the DSU III DBUc, the industries first DDS DSU/CSU to incorporate
synchronous data compression as well as ISDN, V.32, or Switched 56 dial
backup capability.

The DSU III ARc is available in standalone configuration, with full numeric
keypad and LCD display. List price is $1125. List prices for the DSU III
DBUc units start at $1495.

ADTRAN was established in 1985 to design, develop and manufacture advanced
transmission products for high-speed digital communications. In addition
to its DDS products, ADTRAN is a primary provider of HDSL and ISDN digital
loop products to Regional Bell Operating Companies and many well known
OEMs. The broad selection of customer premises products offered by ADTRAN
includes a complete line of DSU/CSUs, a variety of ISDN extension and
network terminating products and flexible T1 multiplexers.
