ADTRAN Sets New Standard for ISDN Modems

New Terminal Adapters Make ISDN Simple to Use

Las Vegas, NV - ADTRAN Inc., (NASDAQ: ADTN) announced today, at the
Networld+Interop trade show in Las Vegas, the introduction of two new
consumer oriented ISDN modems that greatly simplify the process of
connecting to ISDN. The Express XR and Express XRT are standalone devices
that combine terminal adapter and NT1 functions to provide high-speed
access to corporate networks or the Internet at speeds up to 230,400 bps.
The Express XR is a data only device while the Express XRT provides two
analog ports for connecting two analog devices such as a phone, fax
machine, or analog modem.

ADTRAN's new Express Configuration Wizard, a graphical user interface with
a Windows '95 look and feel, makes connecting to ISDN and configuring the
Express XR/XRT easy. Simply enter your ISDN phone numbers and let the
Express Wizard step you through the rest. Sophisticated patent pending
algorithms automatically detect the telephone company parameters such as
switch type and SPID numbers. With Windows '95 Plug and Play
compatibility, automatic COM port selection, and predefined application
profiles you'll be communicating with the office or Internet in no time.

These products are based on ADTRAN's third generation ISDN terminal adapter
design, which now sets a new standard for ease of use while offering
consumers new features such as STAC LZS compression with throughputs to
230,400 bps. Additionally, the Express XRT uses a patent pending method to
accommodate a user's existing analog modem without requiring an extra COM
port on the user's PC.

ADTRAN President Howard Thrailkill says "these products were developed with
the average home user in mind. From the beginning of the project, ease of
use has been the primary focus. "

ISDN Product Manager Leslie Conway said "most home users already have a
high speed analog modem. The Express XRT allows those users to migrate to
ISDN, continue to use their existing modem, and not pay a price penalty or
require an extra COM port to do so. That's unique in the industry! "

Added features include STAC LZS compression per the PPP standard at rates
up to 230.4 kbps, custom calling features like Caller ID, Call Waiting,
Hold, Transfer, and Conference, and Multilink PPP. Additionally, the
Express XRT dynamically allocates bandwidth between voice and data calls.
When transmitting data at maximum throughput over both channels, the
Express XRT will automatically detect calls on the analog ports. If the
user elects to place or answer a phone call, the Express XRT dynamically
adjusts the speed of the data call to one 64 kbps channel and accepts the
analog/voice call on the other. Upon completion of the voice call the
Express XRT automatically resumes the data transfer over both channels.

According to ADTRAN's Vice President of Marketing Danny Windham, "the
Express XRT was designed with the MIS manager in mind; those supporting
hundreds of employees working at home or in remote offices. Remote
configuration and extensive diagnostic capabilities allow the unit to be
configured and maintained from a centralized location without the need for
onsite support."

The list price for the Express XR is $299 with availability slated for May
1996. The Express XRT will list for $449 and is scheduled to begin
shipping in June 1996.

ADTRAN was established in 1985 to design, develop and manufacture advanced
transmission products for high-speed digital communications. In addition
to its HDSL products, ADTRAN is a primary provider of DDS and ISDN digital
loop products to Regional Bell Operating Companies and many well known
OEMs. The broad selection of customer premises products offered by ADTRAN
includes a complete line of DSU/CSUs, a variety of ISDN extension and
network terminating products and flexible T1 multiplexers.
