Adobe Acrobat "Amber" Reader Software Demonstrates New Capabilities for
Desktop Publishing

Demonstration Versions of Acrobat "Amber" Reader for Macintosh and Windows
Now Available

Mountain View, Calif. (April 17, 1996) (Nasdaq: ADBE) -- Adobe Systems
Incorporated announced today that new demonstration versions of the next
release of Adobe Acrobat Reader software are now available. As examples of
the upcoming release of the Acrobat product family, code named "Amber,"
the Acrobat "Amber" Reader illustrates how Acrobat software will integrate
with the power of the World Wide Web and enable customers to easily
publish a broad range of business documents on the Internet and
Intranets.

As with previous versions of the "Amber" Readers, the new demonstration
versions are available to download for free from Adobe's Web site at
http://www.adobe.com/Amber/. To date, downloads of the Adobe Acrobat
Readers have grown to average 10,000 per day or almost 300,000 per month
since Adobe began tracking downloads in November 1995.

Acrobat "Amber" software will address the growing market for corporate
Intranets by enabling average desktop computer users to quickly create,
distribute and access business documents on the Web. Acrobat software
allows customers to use existing business applications, such as word
processing programs, spreadsheets and desktop publishing tools, to easily
create electronic documents that maintain their exact formatting across
computer platforms and printers. The Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF),
the file format created by Acrobat software, is a rapidly growing standard
for the distribution of electronic documents via the Internet, corporate
networks and CD-ROM.

Customers using the Acrobat "Amber" Reader software, will be able to
preview several new features that will be available in the upcoming
release, including the ability to seamlessly view PDF files directly
within leading Web browsers. In addition, the new release of Acrobat will
optimize PDF files for fast downloading and viewing over the Web, and will
enable transparent navigation between PDF files and HTML documents. The
demonstration versions of Acrobat "Amber" Reader support the plug-in
architecture of Netscape Navigator 2.0 and are available for Macintosh,
Windows 95, Windows NT and Windows 3.1. Further, using ActiveX controls,
Adobe will enable PDF files to be rendered directly within Microsoft's
Internet Explorer 3.0.

Adobe also announced a collection of free Acrobat software add-ons that
enhance the ability to create and distribute electronic documents using
Adobe Acrobat 2.1, the current software release. Available free from the
World Wide Web at http://www.adobe.com/Acrobat/Plug-Ins/, some of the
software add-ons include:

OLE Server Plug-Ins

Many corporations and systems integrators use Object Linking and Embedding
(OLE) technology to enable different software components to work together,
allowing customers to more easily access information contained in
different applications. The OLE Plug-Ins enable Acrobat Exchange 2.x and
Acrobat Reader 2.x to act as an OLE server so that customers can
seamlessly use PDF files embedded in other OLE-enabled container
applications. When Acrobat software is used with OLE, business documents
can be distributed through a variety of corporate business systems without
requiring the recipient to have the applications, fonts, or platform used
to create the document. For example, a sales brochure created in Adobe
PageMaker on a Macintosh and converted to PDF can be embedded within a
Lotus Notes database or Microsoft Access form and viewed by someone on a
PC running Microsoft Windows.

Monitor Setup (Device Independent Color) Plug-In

PDF language version 1.1 (the version of PDF associated with Acrobat 2.0
and 2.1 products) allows for device-independent color (DIC)
specifications. This allows Acrobat customers to create electronic
documents that will have consistent color reproduction across a variety of
different devices, such as computer monitors or printers, which can have
widely different color characteristics. This capability can be very
important where maintaining absolute fidelity is a significant business
issue, such as advertising agencies and professional graphic artists
sharing and reviewing documents electronically with their clients.

EPS Links Files

This is not a Plug-In, but rather a recipe and set of example files to help
electronic publishers quickly and easily create reusable, interactive
graphics for PDF files. Through the EPS Links Files, Acrobat customers can
pre- assign hypertext linking capabilities to graphic elements, such as
buttons and arrows, which can link users to another page in the same PDF
file, another document on the World Wide Web or refer to a multimedia
element, such as a QuickTime video. EPS Links Files can be used repeatedly
in a single PDF file or reused in any number of other Acrobat documents.
