Adaptec Introduces PCI-to-UltraSCSI Single-chip Solution

THE AIC-7860 OFFERS LOW-COST ULTRASCSI PERFORMANCE AND FUNCTIONALITY

MILPITAS, CALIF, - March 27, 1996 - Adaptec, Inc. today introduced its
first PCI-to-8-bit UltraSCSI controller chip targeted at low-end servers,
desktops, docking stations and laptops.

The AIC-7860's unique feature set includes a 32-bit PCI Bus Master host
interface connected to an 8-bit UltraSCSI protocol controller (UltraSCSI
provides the fastest data transfer rates available today). Also integrated
into the 128-pin package is the high-performance Adaptec PhaseEngine RISC
processor which reduces CPU utilization and a large 128-byte FIFO which
reduces system latencies.

The AIC-7860 meets all Plug and Play requirements including SCSI Configured
AutoMatically (SCAM) support. The AIC-7860 device operates at either 3.3V
or 5.0V and the on-chip Advanced Power Management (APM) functions
dramatically decrease power consumption with power down features for
complete versatility when designing high-performance, low-power systems.

According to Marc Lowe, general manager of Adaptec's Desktop Products
Group, "Adaptec continues to be the leader in SCSI technology by providing
products that offer OEMs, and ultimately end users, with unmatched
compatibility." The AIC-7860 leverages this SCSI expertise by offering the
latest in SCSI performance -- UltraSCSI. The AIC-7860 with UltraSCSI
provides data transfer rates of up to 20 Megabytes per second. It
complements the existing line of UltraSCSI products which includes the
AIC-7880, a 16/8-bit Ultra Wide SCSI controller designed for the low-end
to high-end server market. Adaptec designs both the AIC-7860 and AIC-7880
UltraSCSI devices, with a patented SCSI I/O cell which results in superior
performance and data integrity.

"The AIC-7860 optimizes end user performance while keeping OEM costs low,"
continues Lowe. "As with all Adaptec products, the AIC-7860 takes
advantage of Adaptec's extensive compatibility with virtually all major
operating systems, hardware platforms and peripherals, to offer both end
users and OEMs optimum flexibility."

PRICING AND AVAILABILITY

The AIC-7860 is packaged in either a 128-pin plastic quad flat pack (PQFP)
or thin quad flat pack (TQFP). Samples are available for $35 now, with
volume production available in Q2 1996.

The AIC-7880 PCI-to-Ultra SCSI single chip controller with up to 40 Mbytes
per second data transfer rate is available now for a sample price of $40.
