Adaptec Ships LAN Emulation Software

PROVIDES FIRST STEP TO MIGRATE CLIENTS AND SERVERS TO ATM

MILPITAS, CALIF, - March 27, 1996 - Adaptec is now shipping LAN Emulation
software that enables customers to deploy ATM clients and servers into
their existing networks. The software emulates an Ethernet network on ATM,
allowing existing network applications to run over ATM networks
transparently, and allowing ATM and Ethernet users to communicate and
share common resources. Adaptec's LAN Emulation software is compliant with
version 1.0 of the LAN Emulation specification from the ATM Forum,
maximizing interoperability.

"Today's LAN users demand network-intensive applications like web access,
collaborative computing, and data warehouse mining," said Gary Law, vice
president of marketing for Adaptec's INTO business unit. "Only ATM offers
them the performance, quality of service, and flexibility to maximize
those applications. LAN Emulation software allows users to migrate to ATM,
experience its benefits, and still protect their legacy investments.
Customers using LAN Emulation will build the infrastructure and experience
to meet current networking challenges and to anticipate networking
challenges of the future."

ABOUT THE SOFTWARE

Adaptec's LAN Emulation software currently supports Windows NT and Sun
Solaris. Drivers for Windows 95, OS/2, DOS/Windows, SunOS, and NetWare
will ship in the second quarter of 1996.

The software has been extensively tested for interoperability with LAN
Emulation servers from Bay Networks, Cisco Systems, FORE Systems,
Interphase, Olicom, 3Com, and Whitetree, and is compatible with all
Adaptec ATM adapters shipped to date.

Adaptec's LAN Emulation implementation boasts four Emulated LANs
(equivalent to four network adapters) from one adapter and standards-
based support for both 1516 byte and 9234 byte data transfers.

"Early test results show that using ATM with a 9234 byte MTU size reduces
server CPU utilization by over forty-five percent over a 1516 byte MTU but
offers the same performance of nearly 21Mb/s," noted Geoff Seelbach,
director of technical services at LANQuest, an independent testing
laboratory.

Gary Law continued, "LANQuest's test results demonstrate that 9K MTU ATM
operation in LAN Emulation increases network performance over
Ethernet-only operation by leveraging those increased CPU efficiencies.
This benefits server-to-server communication in applications such as
network backup and database replication."

AVAILABILITY

Adaptec's LAN Emulation software is available now for free at
http://www.adaptec.com/techsupp/BBS_ATM.html, from the Adaptec BBS at
