XYPLEX SETS NEW PRICE/PERFORMANCE STANDARD FOR BRANCH OFFICE ROUTERS

ROUTERUNNER PROVIDES ADVANCED BANDWIDTH MANAGEMENT FEATURES ACROSS ALL WAN
SERVICES FROM T1/E1 TO ISDN DIAL-UP FOR ACCESSING THE INTERNET AND
CORPORATE NETWORKS

WASHINGTON, D.C., JANUARY 30, 1996 -- Xyplex, Inc., a leading provider of
wide-area network access and internetworking solutions, today announced
the RouteRunner, a new multiprotocol bridge/router for connecting branch
offices and other remote sites to the Internet, corporate networks and
other wide area destinations. RouteRunner provides a full range of
advanced bandwidth management features across all WAN services.

RouteRunner is available in two fixed-configuration models: synchronous and
ISDN. The synchronous model features one LAN port and two WAN ports (async
and sync). The asynchronous port functions not only as a serial back-up
link for disaster recovery, but also can be used to provide additional
bandwidth to the primary WAN link or serve as the primary dial-up routing
link. The ISDN model, featuring one LAN port and one WAN port, provides an
integrated basic rate (BRI) ISDN interface for high-speed connections.

RouteRunner fulfills a complete range of application requirements from
simple e-mail and file transfer to advanced bandwidth-intensive
applications typically found in the healthcare, education, government and
retail industries. Its low cost combined with easy configuration and
installation is ideal for Internet Service Providers whose success depends
on optimizing bandwidth across multiple WAN Services.

"RouteRunner is the ideal solution for connecting to the Internet because
it is easy to install and very reliable. Its performance will accommodate
our needs as our customer base grows," said Cyndi Fernandez, president,
Chelmsford On-line Service, an Internet Service Provider.

Based on Xyplex's WAN-independent internetworking software architecture
called WANScape (see separate press release), RouteRunner offers network
managers the same advanced bandwidth management capabilities available in
all of Xyplex's Network 9000 and Network 3000 routers. These bandwidth
management features include bandwidth on demand, router backup, dial on
demand, time-of-day circuit control, inverse multiplexing and WAN data
compression and can be utilized across all WAN services and asynchronous
connections.

RouteRunner connects to large networks via any type of WAN link, including
Frame Relay and ISDN. By providing WAN connections such as 56/64 kbps.,
Switched-56, X.25, Fractional T1 (1.544 Mbps.) and E1 (2.048 Mbps.),
RouteRunner gives network managers the flexibility to adapt to changing
tariffs and data services without sacrificing bandwidth management
capabilities or having to buy additional routers. The asynchronous port
instantly converts the RouteRunner into a high- performance dial-up
router. With the WANScape architecture, the async port can also be used to
provide additional bandwidth to the primary WAN link or act as a back-up
link.

RouteRunner supports routing of TCP/IP, IPX and AppleTalk (sync model only)
protocols as well as industry standards for Multilink PPP and PPP. When
used as a bridge, RouteRunner serves as a filter connection for protocols
that cannot be routed, such as LAT and NetBIOS.

With RouteRunner, network managers can use a combination of high-
performance filtering, low-demand routing and spoofing in order to control
ISDN and Frame Relay circuit costs and eliminate unnecessary traffic.
RouteRunner has completed interoperability testing with the AT&T 5ESS and
Northern Telecom DMS 100 switches and has passed ISDN certification
testing in Europe, Japan and Australia.

"RouteRunner provides the software functionality of our high- end
internetworking solutions in a simplified, low-cost and low-maintenance
router," said Tony Viola, marketing manager, internetworking. "In
conjunction with the Network 9000 chassis-based routing hub and Network
3000 family of branch office routers, RouteRunner enables network managers
to implement one coherent software architecture for all their WAN access
needs, from async dial-up to ISDN," he said.

The synchronous RouteRunner model (including universal WAN adapter cable)
offers an asynchronous port for dial-in and dial-out operation. The ISDN
model of RouteRunner supports a BRI interface. Both models are available
immediately.

FocalPoint, Xyplex's Windows-based configuration manager, which is included
with RouteRunner, easily steps users through the configuration process.
For full SNMP-based network management, RouteRunner customers can use
Xyplex's award-winning ControlPoint on either SunNet Manager or HP
OpenView/Windows or UNIX platforms.

RouteRunner is distributed through Xyplex's direct sales force and sales
partners worldwide and features an industry-leading three-year warranty.
Xyplex offers a variety of service and support programs including
unlimited 7-day, 24-hour telephone support, 24-hour parts replacement and
