XYPLEX UNVEILS ARCHITECTURE THAT DELIVERS SIMULTANEOUS USE OF MULTIPLE WAN
SERVICES

COMPANY CREDITS WANSCAPE WITH DRAMATIC GROWTH AND MARKET SHARE MOMENTUM IN
NETWORK ACCESS PRODUCTS

WASHINGTON, D.C., JANUARY 30, 1996 -- Xyplex, Inc., a leading provider of
wide-area network access and internetworking solutions, today announced
WANScape, a comprehensive internetworking architecture that enables
network managers to utilize any combination of WAN services
simultaneously. This unique capability permits network managers to match
WAN services, application and bandwidth requirements easily and
dynamically.

WANScape simplifies router configuration by decoupling routing policies and
bandwidth management functions from the actual WAN service connection. As
a result, network managers are provided with a uniform set of bandwidth
management capabilities that are identical across all WAN services.

Advanced techniques such as inverse multiplexing, time-of-day circuit
control and queuing help to optimize performance and provide dynamic
control over wide area network costs. Because there is no need for new
hardware or re-configuration of routing policies, WANScape gives users
unprecedented freedom to change WAN services quickly based on the
requirements of their business and their applications or in response to
changes in service tariffs or availability.

"Aggregating bandwidth across multiple, different WAN services is the next
major phase of wide area networking," said George Conant, Xyplex
co-founder and vice president of technology. "Rather than apply bandwidth
management techniques to a single WAN service, or provide access to only
one service at a time, as some of our competitors are just beginning to
do, WANScape enables customers to use the same defined routing policies
and advanced bandwidth management techniques across multiple WAN services
simultaneously."

With WANScape, Xyplex routers have the capability to BOND any combination
of WAN services (including asynchronous dial-up lines) to provide optimal
WAN performance. For example, a network manager can establish a
performance threshold for a primary Frame Relay link and instruct the
router to bring up an ISDN BRI link whenever that threshold is reached.
The router will aggregate throughput over the Frame Relay and ISDN
channels simultaneously until the ISDN link is no longer necessary, at
which time the ISDN line will be torn down automatically.

"We've been incorporating major components of the WANScape architecture
over the last 12 months. Based on our revenue and unit shipment growth,
the market is clearly embracing the multi-service capabilities we're
providing," said Steve Mank, Xyplex vice president of marketing. Xyplex
remote office internetworking bookings have grown 300% over the past year
and according to market share studies recently published by International
Data Corp. (IDC), Xyplex is among the top three in remote access market
share along with Xylogics and Cisco and has climbed into fourth position
in mid-range internetworking equipment behind Cisco, Bay Networks and
3Com.

WANScape is embedded in all Xyplex bridge/router products to provide a
complete remote office to central site solution. Products included in the
WANScape architecture are the chassis-based Network 9000 for central site
environments, the modular Network 3000 family for larger regional offices
and the RouteRunner, a new low-cost, fixed hardware configuration product
designed for remote offices (see separate press release).

With WANScape, any combination of ISDN, Frame Relay, leased line or
asynchronous dial-up connection can be configured and managed dynamically
according to bandwidth on demand techniques prescribed by the network
manager.
