Who's Who Online Commences Online Nominations

New York, Jan. 31 -- Who's Who Online on the World Wide Web
(http://www.whoswho-online.com) announced today that online nomination of
others as well as self nominations will be accepted at the web site. The
decision was driven by responses to a survey conducted on the Internet
during the last quarter of 1995, in which a majority of respondents
favored both options. The publisher had previously used personalized
invitations for this purpose.

The technology behind Who's Who Online generates a searchable "home page"
for each individual who completes an online registration form
(http://www.whoswho-online.com/reg.html) and clicks an on-screen button to
submit the data. The page is then immediately searchable for fifteen
minutes, to allow the nominee time to review her/his submission and - if
changes are required - to rekey and resubmit the data. "It's the 21st
century equivalent of typesetting," noted the publisher, John J. McCabe.
After fifteen minutes, however, all entries are removed from search until
each has been reviewed, which currently takes about one week.

What are the requirements for being profiled in Who's Who Online? First and
foremost, a person must be "online," and enter an electronic mail address
that is reachable from the Internet. Obviously, one must also be able to
access the web site to complete the online data form. Beyond that, the
review committee evaluates overall presentation - how individuals convey a
sense of who they are and allow their personalities to shine through -
rather than any specific criteria. "This is not some attempt at Edwardian
snobbery, or some sort of exclusive social register," quipped Chris
Lehmann, editor of the site's online webzine. "Rather, it is a way for
people with something to offer the worldwide Internet community a chance
to identity themselves and their accomplishments on the web."

There is no charge for being profiled in Who's Who Online, and individuals
whose profiles are accepted for publication on the web site receive
complimentary membership. The site looks to corporate advertisers as well
as membership upgrades to offer this free service to people searching the
site on the World Wide Web. What's offered in these membership upgrades?
First and foremost, the opportunity to have one's photograph displayed on
one's "home page," as well as other customization features such as
additional web pages and photographs and links to other web sites.
