VERITY REVOLUTIONIZES USERS' ACCESS TO INFORMATION ON THE WEB

DEMONSTRATES AT DEMO '96 FINDING, FILTERING AND ACCESSING INFORMATION BASED
ON CONTENT.

INDIAN WELLS, CA., JANUARY 29, 1996 -- Verity, Inc. (Nasdaq:VRTY) a leading
provider of search and retrieval applications for the enterprise and the
Internet will demonstrate today at DEMO '96 a suite of capabilities that
will eliminate the need for users of the web to know where the information
is located.

Interaction on the web has been driven by addresses such as URLs, and
storage of those addresses in tools such as bookmarks. Building on
Verity's leading search and retrieval technology, the demonstrations will
show a powerful new approach to navigation, association and filtering of
information on the web, all based on the recognition of content.

Designed to empower the web user, the technology will automatically create
a record of the information contained on the web pages viewed. Using this
information, a browser can create a list of links to web sites containing
the information the user wants without having to remember locations and
simply follow the links back to each site.

This technology is also extended in the demonstration to show how the
concept of a user created hyperlink can be utilized while browsing to
immediately link to other sites with similar information. Now consumers of
information can dynamically combine data sources to delve deeper into a
particular topic.

Verity will also demonstrate "filtering" of information to the individual
user, as a valuable means to focus the flow of information or as a screen
for unwanted offensive content. Applied in a browser, the Verity product
blocks out any information the user prefers not to view.

"Combined, these three applications of Verity's technology now deliver a
new level of power and control to users on the Internet," said Philippe
Courtot, chairman and CEO of Verity, Inc.

Verity, Inc. was founded in April 1988 and is headquartered in Mountain
View, CA. Verity develops and markets the Topic family of software tools
