VERITY AND ILLUSTRA ANNOUNCE THEY WILL WORK TOGETHER TO INTEGRATE POPULAR
VERITY TOPIC SEARCH ENGINE WITH ILLUSTRA'S SERVER

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIF. --FEBRUARY 8, 1996 --Verity, Inc. (Nasdaq:VRTY), a
leading provider of search and retrieval applications for the enterprise,
and Illustra Information Technologies, Inc., the leading provider of rich
content management systems, today announced that the two companies have
agreed to work together to incorporate Verity's Topic search technology
into an Illustra DataBlade module. The new Verity DataBlade module, which
will run with the Illustra Server to provide customers with Verity's
full-text search functionality, will be available in Q2 '96.

"We are very excited about working with Illustra," said Philippe Courtot,
chairman and CEO of Verity, Inc. "Customers have long been searching for a
simplified way to develop applications that integrate structured databases
with unstructured textual information. Illustra's DataBlade architecture
is the ideal means to do this. Providing a Verity DataBlade module not
only adds powerful text-searching capabilities, it can also link into our
unique 'agent' technology to become a catalyst for an entirely new class
of database applications."

"Illustra's technology is based on total extensibility, with the power to
build systems that let customers manage any kind of information and manage
it in a way that best suits their particular needs," said Dick Williams,
CEO and president of Illustra. "Documents are an extremely important part
of any organization's information assets. Text is also a major part of the
rich and dynamic content that must be managed on most Web sites. By
working with Verity and its leading text search product for Web
applications, Illustra is able to respond to customers seeking Verity's
special expertise to fill their text search requirements, particularly in
Web environments."

The Illustra Server allows users to store, manage, retrieve and manipulate
rich multimedia data such as audio, video, maps, text and images in a
single database along with traditional character strings and numbers. This
server's "intelligence" comes from DataBlade extensions or "snap-in"
software that enables the server to access the content of virtually any
kind of existing, new or user-defined data. DataBlade modules can be built
easily by Illustra, its third-party partners, or by customers.

Illustra and Verity will work together to develop a DataBlade module that
will allow users of the Illustra content management system to perform the
full range of sophisticated queries and filtering available with Verity
Topic search on the text stored in their Illustra content management
system. The DataBlade offers an easy, well-integrated way to develop
applications that include multiple data types and allow the use of
database operations in conjunction with full-text search. Clients of the
DataBlade will be able to:

Search using the full range of powerful features such as fuzzy logic,
proximity, boolean, and thesaurus. Gain the performance and scalability
advantages of Verity's real-time engine for text operations. Have a
tightly integrated system administered from a single Illustra interface
