Trend Micro Devices First to Detect and Clean Windows 95 Virus

"BOZA" Virus

Cupertino, CA, Feb. 12, 1996 - Trend Micro Devices is the first anti- virus
developer to both detect and clean the Microsoft Windows 95 Boza virus.
The Boza virus is the first known virus designed specifically for the
Windows 95 environment. While not widespread, it is representative of an
entirely new class of viruses that experts predict will threaten windows
95 users throughtout 1996 and beyond. Trend has updated all its anti-virus
products with the new algorithms required to clean the Boza virus. These
products include:

PC-CILLIN 95 - (JOINTLY DEVELOPED WITH TOUCHSTONE SOFTWARE) - "The Complete
Anti-Virus For Windows 95 And The Internet." A complete anti-virus
solution for workstations.

LANDESK VIRUS PROTECT - The leanding file-server anti-virus program, sold
by Intel Corp. and integrated into Novell's ManageWise, a network
management utility.

INTERSCAN VIRUS WALL - INTERNET GATEWAY SOFTWARE THAT PROTECTS the internal
LAN from e-mail and Internet-borne viruses.

The Boza virus is relatively non-destructive compared to many DOS- based
viruses like Michelangelo. However, because of "bugs" in the actual virus
code, it somtimes damages executable files such as the .EXE files in
Microsoft Word. The virus works by attaching itself to executables files
then modifying those files so the virus executes first. Once executed by
the user (when the user double-clicks on a program, for example), it
copies itself to other executable files then returns control to the host
program. This all happens in milliseconds, and the user typically has no
idea an infection took place.

An important note: This new Windows 95 class of viruses does not mean
Windows 95 itself has a virus. Rather, these new viruses are designed
specifically to replicate and cause damage using the Windows 95
environment. All executable files are targets.

Daniel Chiang, president of Trend Micro Devices, is happy to see this
demonstration of Trend's leadership in anti-virus techonology. "It is
vital for an anti-virus software developer, especially one as large as
Trend with so many software partners who depend on our technolgy, to move
quickly when new virus threats appear. Our quick action on this Windows 95
virus is a result of our expert R&D team, who have been working nearly
around the clock to identify this virus, analyze it, and construct
software routines that clean it." Chiang also warns users to look out for
more Windows 95 viruses in the coming months.
