Siemens Nixdorf and Microsoft intensify cooperation

January 30, 1996 -- BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS / MUNICH, GERMANY. A NEW
AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE LONG TIME PARTNERS SIEMENS NIXDORF
INFORMATIONSSYSTEME AG AND MICROSOFT CORPORATION CALLS FOR INCREASED
COOPERATION IN DEVELOPING CLIENT/SERVER TECHNOLOGIES THAT ARE BASED ON
MICROSOFT BACKOFFICE. SIEMENS NIXDORF WILL INCREASINGLY BASE ITS FUTURE
WORKPLACE CENTERED APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT ON MICROSOFT TECHNOLOGIES.

Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) and Microsoft Visual Basic will build
the platform for component-based software that extends into Windows NT,
UNIX and mainframe server environments. The individual Microsoft
BackOffice server applications will be integrated into the Siemens Nixdorf
business solutions approach and will thus play a major role on Windows
NT-based server systems. Using those Microsoft technologies, Siemens
Nixdorf has developed a solution platform which eliminates the need for
detailed programming and increases application development productivity by
a factor of ten.

This new agreement makes Siemens Nixdorf a strategic development partner
for Microsoft. Based on its long heritage in mainframe business, Siemens
Nixdorf will support Microsoft in promoting client/server- based
solutions. By enhancing the software development tools OLE and Microsoft
BackOffice, Siemens Nixdorf will help to satisfy professional needs for
powerful client/server solutions in a heterogeneous network environment.

With this strong cooperation, Siemens Nixdorf will participate in the
Microsoft Solution Provider and Solution Developer programs, as well as in
Microsoft Open Design Process initiatives and the Microsoft Solution
Framework program. Siemens Nixdorf and Microsoft are working together to
extend the Microsoft Solution Framework to meet the needs of corporate
developers for tools and concepts to build large-scale enterprise
applications. Both companies will also be working together in customer
projects and to develop reusable components like ALX- COMET, which was
originally developed by Siemens Nixdorf and is now available to the
Microsoft Solution Provider community.

According to Steve Ballmer, Executive Vice President of Microsoft, "the
agreement reached proves the acceptance that Microsoft technology finds in
all areas of professional IT environments and will prepare Microsoft and
Microsoft BackOffice the inroad into higher integration into professional
business solutions," and Peter Page, Executive Vice President of Siemens
Nixdorf, calls the agreement "a natural fit between Microsoft as the major
player in the workplace extending into professional client/server
solutions and Siemens Nixdorf as a major player in corporate IT
solutions."
