Siemens Nixdorf powers up PCs

January 30, 1996 -- PADERBORN/MUNICH, GERMANY. WITH THE NEWLY DEVELOPED
SYNAPSE2-PC NEURAL BOARD, WHICH WILL BE AVAILABLE BEGINNING THIS APRIL,
SIEMENS NIXDORF IS OPENING UP NEW APPLICATIONS FOR IT'S PERSONAL COMPUTERS
IN THE FIELD OF VOICE, IMAGE AND PATTERN RECOGNITION. THE HEART OF THE
BOARD IS THE MA16 NEURAL SIGNAL PROCESSOR, WHICH HAS BEEN OPTIMIZED FOR
HANDLING PATTERN RECOGNITION ALGORITHMS AND LENDS THE PERSONAL COMPUTER
BREATHTAKING SPEED OF MORE THAN 1.2 MILLION OPERATIONS PER SECOND.
NUMEROUS DEVELOPMENT TOOLS FOR WINDOWS NT-BASED NEURAL APPLICATIONS WITH
GRAPHICAL USER INTERFACES ROUND OUT THIS PORTFOLIO OF OFFERINGS.

Classically designed personal computers quickly reach the limits of their
performance envelope when faced with complex tasks in the field of voice,
image and pattern recognition. However neural networks do an especially
good job of handling these kinds of tasks. A neural network is able to
recognize patterns that are based on numerous different information
elements and "learn" to correctly associate them.

The Synapse2-PC neural board from Siemens Nixdorf allows any personal
computer equipped with the Peripheral Computer Interface (PCI) bus system
and Windows NT to be upgraded to a neural computer and used for
compute-intensive pattern recognition operations.

Synapse2-PC is the little brother of Synapse-1, the world's most powerful
neural computer, and will initially be demonstrating it's practicality and
reliability in face recognition applications for self service safe deposit
vaults and automated teller machines.
