DATA RACE ANNOUNCES X.21 CONNECTIVITY PLUS EURO-ISDN TERMINAL ADAPTER

WASHINGTON, D.C. - January 30, 1996 - DATA RACE (NASDAQ: RACE) announced at
ComNet today its X.21-I interface feature module for the DATA RACE MACH DS
plus multiplexer product. Starting at US$480 list, the X.21 interface
supports full communication functionality, including high-quality,
reliable V.35 and V.24 standard interfaces, which can be employed when
X.21 is not required.

The X.21-I module is only one of many communications modules available in
the MACH DS plus or ROADRUNNER 5000 or 6000 series of Data, Voice, Fax,
and LAN multiplexers. The module is fully compatible with existing
networks using MACH DS plus and ROADRUNNER 5000 and 6000 products, and
provides an approved interface to the European PTT and to standard PBX
equipment in the European Common (EC) Union. The X.21-I module provides
the physical interface between a MACH DS plus or ROADRUNNER product (DTE)
and the public circuit-switched telecommunications network (DCE). This
interface is a high-speed bit-serial synchronous transmission path to the
DCE for end-to-end digital circuit-switched and packet-switched
telecommunications networks. WAN connections at speeds up to 128Kbps are
supported by the composite link of the ROADRUNNER or 1.544Mbps in the MACH
DS plus.

EURO-ISDN TERMINAL ADAPTER OPERATES IN PRIMARY AND BACK-UP MODES

At the same time, the company introduced the MACH DS plus Euro- ISDN
Terminal Adapter (EITA). The EITA operates as a primary multiplexer link
or as a dial-back-up facility for the leased line during circuit failures.
ISDN is the accepted standard for dial-up data communications in the
European Community, and the EITA is compatible with EC ISDN standards,
including the UK SIN172, German ITR6, and NET3. This is a feature module
and requires the MACH DS plus X.21-I interface to operate. In the back-up
mode, the EITA detects the external communication failure and switches
over to the EITA automatically. Back-up is also selectable by time of day
and day of week. The EITA "piggybacks" on the X.21 interface module and is
available in the ROADRUNNER 6000 (starting at US$3145 list) as well as a
feature option in all MACH DS plus multiplexers.

FUTURE-PROOF MODULAR ARCHITECTURE SUPPORTS MULTIPLE STANDARDS

Due to its innovative modular architecture, the MACH DS plus unit can
support multiple protocols and communications data transmission
technologies from a single VariLink chassis system. Each DATA RACE module
incorporates its own processor to support its functions and speeds. When
customers want to accommodate new technologies, they will not need to
replace a whole system, but just plug in a new module, making DATA RACE
products Future-Proof. This means that customers can readily protect their
investment in communications technologies while keeping pace with
innovations.

FEATURES AND BENEFITS OF THE MACH DS plus X.21-I INTERFACE:

British Approvals Board for Telecommunications (BABT) and
      Common Europe (CE) approved
   Full-duplex X.21 synchronous serial interface to 128Kbps
Additional V.35 or V.24 synchronous communication support
   Menu-driven configuration
Public carrier clocking for receive and transmit data paths
Companion X.21 interface to access second ISDN B channel

REMOTE ACCESS TO THE CORPORATE ENVIRONMENT

"One particular market force drives communications technology today,"
explains W. B. Barker, the company's president and CEO. "It's the need for
remote access to corporate environments." DATA RACE offers two principal
product lines that address this market: modular, upgradable, multi-media
multiplexers for connecting branch offices with headquarters systems, and
custom modems for notebook computersmodems that support data, voice, Fax,
answering machines, and speakerphones. A third market segment,
telecommuting, is growing at a rapid rate. "The needs of the telecommuter
marry the capabilities we are delivering to the other two segments. DATA
RACE serves these markets innovatively with solutions that are flexible,
cost-effective, and Future-Proof," Barker emphasizes.

ABOUT THE COMPANY

DATA RACE Inc. (NASDAQ: RACE) designs, manufactures, and markets a line of
communication products that meet the need for remote access to the
corporate environment. These products include modems for notebook
computers that support data and Fax connections as well as voice
connections through speakerphone and answering machine functions, sold
primarily to manufacturers of notebook computers. Also included is a line
of network multiplexers which carry data, LAN, voice, and Fax traffic
between a company's branch and home office over a broad range of wide area
communications speeds and services. These networking products are sold
through distributors, resellers, and system integrators throughout the
world.
