DATA RACE SUPPORTS T1 COMMUNICATIONS ON MACH DS plus MODULAR MULTIPLEXER

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- January 30, 1996 - DATA RACE (NASDAQ: RACE) at ComNet
today announced its integrated T1 Drop and Insert Controller for the DATA
RACE MACH DS plus multiplexer product is completing successful Beta
testing and DATA RACE will begin shipping orders by February 15, 1996. The
controller module adds T1 WAN capability to the innovative MACH DS plus
64-port Voice, Fax, Data, and LAN multi-protocol multiplexers from a
single VariLink chassis system (uses interchangeable rear-panel connector
adapters to provide the interface between system cards and the users
environment). The T1 controller (selling at US$2895 list) is fully
compatible with existing MACH DS plus networks and includes the unique T1
DS1/DSX connector adapter with cables.

"T1" is the telephone company's terminology for a high-speed leased- line
capable of transmitting information at a rate of 1.544 million bits per
second (Mbps). Traditionally, this service is used by many customers for
connection from their PBX equipment to the phone company. The T1 line
provides 24 individual channels (DS0s) at 64 thousand bits per second
(Kbps) each and consequently allows the customer to sustain 24
simultaneous telephone calls. T1 rates are rapidly declining due to
technological advances in the digital fiber infrastructure and increasing
competition. Voice traffic is not the only information that can be
transmitted over T1 lines. Many companies have become key users of T1
facilities for their data and LAN traffic. However, companies have
typically been forced to lease two separate T1 lines; one for voice
traffic to the PBX equipment and one for the data/LAN equipment. Many have
been compelled to use expensive T1 channel banks.

With the DATA RACE T1 Drop & Insert Controller, a single T1 line can now be
used for voice, data, and LAN traffic. The individual T1 channels can be
separated to provide any number of channels (DS0s) to the MACH DS plus
multiplexer's Data and LAN connections with the remaining channels routed
to the customer's PBX equipment for telephone calls. Separate T1 lines for
voice and data or external channel banks are no longer needed. In
addition, along with the integrated CSU/DSU, the MACH DS plus T1
Controller allows direct connection to the carrier T1 network via an
industry-standard RJ48C jack.

BENEFITS OF MODULAR ARCHITECTURE

The modular architecture of the DATA RACE MACH DS plus product enables
customers to protect their investment in data communication technologies,
while keeping pace with innovations. Each DATA RACE module incorporates
its own processor to support its functions and speeds. When customers want
to upgrade, they can just plug in a new module instead of replacing a
whole system. T1 rates are rapidly decreasing. Even organizations that may
not require T1 transmission today are planning for it in the future as
bandwidth requirements escalate and the needs for T1 network reliability
and functionality increase. Organizations can install a MACH DS plus
system now, knowing that incorporating future technological advances
simply requires adding one or more modules. Because DATA RACE products
support growth, customers can benefit from the low life-cycle cost of
building, expanding, and maintaining DATA RACE networks. "The DATA RACE
solution, featuring modularity, low cost, and ready upgradability, is the
most cost-effective protection your communications system investment can
have. Those who need T1 flexibility now or want to integrate it in the
future should invest in the DATA RACE MACH DS plus system today," advised
Tim Eargle, DATA RACE director of marketing for network products.

REMOTE ACCESS TO THE CORPORATE ENVIRONMENT

W. B. Barker, the company's president and CEO observes, "One particular
market force drives communications technology today: the need for remote
access to the corporate environment." DATA RACE offers two principal
product lines that address this market: modular, upgradable, multi-media
multiplexers for connecting branch offices with headquarters systems and
custom modems for notebook computers--modems that support data, voice,
fax, answering machines, and speakerphones. A third market segment,
telecommuting, is growing at a rapid rate. "The needs of the telecommuters
marry the capabilities we are delivering to the other two segments. DATA
RACE serves these markets innovatively with solutions that are flexible,
cost-effective, and," Barker emphasizes, "Future-Proof."

ABOUT THE COMPANY

DATA RACE Inc. (NASDAQ: RACE) designs, manufactures, and markets a line of
communication products that meet the need for remote access to the
corporate environment. These products include modems for notebook
computers that support data and fax connections as well as voice
connections through speakerphone and answering machine functions, sold
primarily to manufacturers of notebook computers. Also included is a line
of network multiplexers which carry data, LAN, voice, and fax traffic
between a company's branch and home office, over a broad range of wide
area communications speeds and services. These networking products are
sold through distributors, resellers, and system integrators throughout
the world.
