PROGRESS SOFTWARE TO OPEN FOR BUSINESS ON WORLD WIDE WEB

CRESCENT DIVISION SET TO GO ON-LINE WITH SECURE SALES AND DOWNLOAD OF
VISUAL BASIC TOOLS AND COMPONENTS

Bedford, Mass., USA, January 30, 1996 -- Progress Software Corporation
(NASDAQ: PRGS) today took a leadership position in utilizing the World
Wide Web to securely sell and deliver its application development software
to users throughout the world. As the first deliverable of Progress
Software's long-term Web marketing strategy, its Crescent Division will
launch the Code Depot*, a new on-line storefront specifically designed to
meet the time-sensitive needs of professional Visual Basic application
programmers.

Crescent, the leading Visual Basic tools and components vendor, will offers
its own products, as well as complementary products from other vendors,
through its Code Depot located at the Crescent Web site
(http://www.progress.com/crescent/). With Crescent's round-the-clock
accessibility and concise product information, developers benefit from
one-stop shopping to select and obtain in a timely manner the tools they
need to develop robust applications in Visual Basic. Unlike other
electronic services, there is no subscription fee for shopping the Code
Depot. Crescent will offer developers the flexibility of either securely
placing an order for delivery of shrink-wrapped software and
documentation, or downloading code directly from the Web site,
24-hours-a-day, seven days a week. Code Depot is scheduled to go on-line
in early February.

The Code Depot will leverage Cambridge, Mass.-based Open Market Inc.'s
Merchant Solution*, the first complete, secure transaction management
technology enabling companies to sell their products on the World Wide
Web. Merchant Solution is a secure environment for processing Web-based
business transactions, so on-line payment for products can be protected,
managed and tracked with confidence by Progress Software, as well as its
customers.

The Enterprise division of Progress Software, developer and marketer of the
PROGRESS Application Development Environment, also announced plans to make
available its PROGRESS SmartObjects* reusable application components via a
storefront located on the Progress Software Web site. Progress Software
and its Application Partners will supply vertical and horizontal business
components that can be assembled to create PROGRESS Version 8
applications. The PROGRESS SmartObjects storefront is scheduled to go
on-line in the second quarter of 1996.

"The Internet is an exciting vehicle to sell and deliver products. And
Progress Software is committed to becoming the premier supplier to
developers seeking to take advantage of the Web to obtain software when
and where they need it," said Joseph Alsop, president of Progress Software
Corporation. "Secure commerce on the Web makes tools and services
instantly accessible regardless of time or geography."
