SPECIAL EDITION OF THE WORLD WIDE WEB JOURNAL HITS SHELVES

SEBASTOPOL, CA--The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) has released, in
cooperation with O'Reilly & Associates, a special issue of the World Wide
Web Journal, a quarterly publication serving as the official voice of the
W3C. The journal is now available in bookstores worldwide.

A special edition unveiled at the Fourth International World Wide Web
Conference in Boston in December 1995, this first issue of the World Wide
Web Journal consists of the Conference Proceedings (57 technical papers),
as well as the two best papers from regional conferences. Selected from
197 submissions, these 57 papers cover topics crucial to Web development,
including collaborative systems, tools for building Webs over databases,
the Web applied to education, spoken language interfaces to the Web, Web
software design techniques, mobile agents and authoring tools.

"It's perhaps ironic that the Web was originally designed as a
collaborative work tool, yet the explosion of Web sites has made it
difficult for any of us to keep up with all the best work in the field,"
said Tim O'Reilly, president of O'Reilly & Associates. "An old-fashioned
paper journal still has an important role in disseminating information,
creating a document of record that persists over time, and focusing the
attention of the Web community on issues that matter."

The World Wide Web Journal, a technical publication aimed at Webmasters,
programmers and managers, provides timely, in-depth coverage of the W3C's
technological developments, such as protocols for security, replication
and caching, HTML and SGML and content labeling. Regular quarterly issues
explore broader issues with Web luminaries and include articles on
controversial legal topics such as censorship and intellectual property
rights.
