NETSCAPE INTRODUCES NETSCAPE LIVE3D FOR INTEGRATING RICH 3D GRAPHICS INTO
NETSCAPE SOFTWARE PLATFORM

AGREES TO ACQUIRE LEADING VRML VENDOR PAPER SOFTWARE; RELEASES BETA OF
LIVE3D EXTENSIONS IN SUPPORT OF "MOVING WORLDS "VRML STANDARD

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (February 12, 1996) -- Netscape Communications
Corporation (NASDAQ: NSCP) today announced Netscape Live3D, technology
that enables industry-standard Virtual Reality Markup Language (VRML)
graphics to be easily integrated into the Netscape software platform. As
the foundation for Live3D, Netscape announced the signing of a definitive
agreement to acquire Paper Software, Inc., a leader in distributed
three-dimensional (3D) graphics and maker of the widely acclaimed WebFX
VRML software.

Netscape also announced today a beta release of Netscape Live3D extensions
for Netscape Navigator 2.0, combining VRML viewing technology and powerful
3D extensions to Java, JavaScript and Netscape's plug-in application
programming interfaces (APIs). The Live3D beta, which brings 3D
capabilities to Netscape Navigator 2.0 client software, allows developers
to write 3D applications immediately using the new APIs and enables
Netscape Navigator users to experience live 3D Internet content. Netscape
plans to integrate Live3D technology into future versions of its highly
popular Netscape Navigator.

"Paper Software's products already incorporate open standards such as Java
and JavaScript, making the company an excellent partner for Netscape in
the evolution of Live3D," said Marc Andreessen, Netscape's vice president
of technology. "Paper Software and Netscape share a strategy of embracing
open standards and providing a rich, cross- platform environment for live
online applications. Paper's WebFX provides an ideal foundation for
Live3D, enabling us to begin to make rich graphical capabilities
immediately and widely available on the Internet."

Netscape intends to purchase 100 percent of privately held Paper Software
in a stock transaction, to be accounted for as a pooling of interests.
Paper Software, based in Woodstock, New York, is a leading provider of
open software that enables people to view, organize, filter and understand
distributed information easily through the use of multi-dimensional user
interfaces. Currently employing 12 people, the company was founded in 1990
by Mike McCue to create simple user interface technologies.

"Integrating Paper Software's 3D technology into the Netscape platform will
enable developers to build a host of exciting and dynamic applications for
a broad base of users," said Paper Software chief executive officer Mike
McCue. "We plan to continue to work to keep Netscape at the forefront of
the evolution of 3D on the Web."

Netscape Live3D implements the "Moving Worlds" 3D VRML specification
announced today, which is being proposed for the 2.0 version of VRML. More
than 50 leading companies have announced support for Moving Worlds,
including Adobe Systems,Inc., Chaco Communications, Inc., Dimension X,
IBM, Intervista, Macromedia, Silicon Graphics, Inc., Sony Corporation and
many others.

"Netscape's entry into the VRML community is very welcome," said Mark
Pesce, co-author of VRML. "Rather than trying to foist an independently
developed and incompatible specification upon the VRML community, Netscape
has carefully followed the development of the Moving Worlds standard,
partnered with respected VRML leader Paper Software and provided a
solution that is fully compatible with VRML 1.0."

"Intervista is delighted with Netscape's endorsement of VRML and its
commitment to 3D as a key technology for the Internet," said Tony Parisi,
co-author of VRML and chief technology officer for Intervista Software.
"Live3D provides a rich framework for describing 3D interactive worlds and
plug-in software components based on emerging Internet standards.
Intervista looks forward to working with Netscape to bring Intervista's
line of value-added networked 3D solutions to the market."

In addition to creating a rich environment for software applications,
incorporating Netscape Live3D in Netscape Navigator will make 3D
applications practical and easy to use for millions of users. The Live3D
APIs provide a framework on which developers can build multi- user 3D
games, chat applications, geographical information systems, authoring
environments, interactive advertisements, online presentations and
database visualization applications.

"Integrating Netscape Live3D into future versions of Netscape software will
bring industry-standard 3D functionality to the millions of Netscape
users," said Karl Jacob, chief executive officer of Dimension X. "This
huge new VRML user base provides expansive opportunity for companies such
as Dimension X to build high-powered 3D-oriented applications. Our ICE
rendering engine and Java tools will be available to add value to this
environment."

"Netscape's Live3D puts 3D into the mainstream," said Dr. Dan Greening,
president of Chaco Communications." Adding our multi-user Internet
software, Pueblo, or hardware accelerated VR Scout viewer to Live3D lets
innovators create real community on the Internet. The combination makes
developing real-time education, commerce and games possible."

The beta version of the Netscape Live3D extensions for Netscape Navigator
2.0 are available for immediate downloading from the Netscape Internet
site for Microsoft Windows 3.1, Windows 95 and Windows NT operating
environments. Macintosh and UNIX versions are scheduled for availability
later this quarter.

Live3D supports two-dimensional Netscape Navigator plug-ins such as
ShockWave, VDOLive and RealAudio in 3D space. Using JavaScript and Live3D,
developers and authors can create layers of media including 2D and 3D
graphics, images, video, text and sound. Developers can apply behaviors
such as spinning or bouncing to any 3D object, or make Live3D objects act
on events such as a mouse click, key press or camera movement. Netscape
Communications Corporation is a premier provider of open software for
linking people and information over enterprise networks and the Internet.
The company offers a full line of Netscape Navigator clients, servers,
development tools, and Netscape Internet Applications to create a complete
platform for next-generation, live online applications. Traded on NASDAQ
under the symbol "NSCP," Netscape Communications Corporation is based in
Mountain View, California.
