NETSCAPE 'GOLD RUSH' CONTEST KICKS OFF NETSCAPE NAVIGATOR GOLD PUBLIC BETA

CONTEST AND PARTNERSHIPS WITH NINE INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDERS FUEL ERA OF
PERSONAL INTERNET PUBLISHING

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (January 29, 1996) - Netscape Communications
Corporation (NASDAQ: NSCP) today announced the Netscape "Gold Rush"
Contest to kick off the public beta test of Netscape Navigator Gold 2.0
software, now available for downloading from the Netscape Internet site.
(See related release.) Netscape Navigator Gold combines all the features
of the popular Netscape Navigator 2.0 client with easy- to-use personal
Internet publishing capabilities. The contest will award cash prizes of up
to US$5,000 for the best home pages created with Netscape Navigator Gold
and will encourage people of all online skill levels to take an active
role in publishing on the Internet.

Netscape is also partnering with nine leading Internet service providers
(ISPs) to usher in a new era of personal Internet publishing services,
providing people with an easy way to post personal home pages on the
Internet. The ISPs will work with Netscape to provide one-button
publishing, a new standard in Internet publishing that will enable
consumers to transfer onto the Internet at the touch of a button all the
files, links and images in their personal home page. Three of the ISPs --
Concentric Network Corporation, EarthLink Network and PSINet Inc. -- will
work with Netscape to post home pages beginning immediately. Six more ISPs
-- AT&T WorldNet Service, GTE Intelligent Network Services, NETCOM On-line
Communication Services, Pacific Bell Internet Services, the Portal
Information Network and US WEST's !NTERACT Service -- will add their
personal Internet publishing services when the final version of Netscape
Navigator Gold becomes available later this year.

"Just as applications such as Adobe PageMaker spawned the desktop
publishing industry, Netscape Navigator Gold will help to create a new age
of personal Internet publishing, enabling millions of content consumers to
become content creators," said Mike Homer, vice president of marketing at
Netscape. "The Gold Rush Contest and our partnerships with leading ISPs
will start this new era by making it easy for users to post their pages at
the touch of a button."

The Netscape Gold Rush Contest, which begins today, will award cash prizes
to people creating the best home pages using Netscape Navigator Gold. One
Grand Prize winner will receive US$5,000 for creating the best overall
page. Five Best of Category winners will receive US$1000 for creating the
best page in the following categories: Personal, Company, Department,
Product and Special Interest Group. Fifty Honorable Mention winners will
each receive Netscape merchandise for outstanding or innovative use of
Netscape Navigator Gold. All winning pages will be posted on the Netscape
Internet site and first round winners will be recognized during Marc
Andreessen's keynote at the Netscape Developers' Conference in March. Some
entries may also become templates in the final version of Netscape
Navigator Gold.

To enter the contest, participants simply create their own home pages using
Netscape Navigator Gold and register the page on the Netscape Navigator
Gold Rush Contest site. Contest registration is provided courtesy of
Yahoo. Once registered, pages entered are listed by category in the
contest directory on the Yahoo Web site where they can be easily located
by other people online. The deadline for contest entry is midnight,
February 25, 1996, and entries are limited to one per person.
