NETSCAPE ANNOUNCES PUBLIC BETA OF NETSCAPE NAVIGATOR GOLD

COMBINES WEB NAVIGATION, INTERACTIVE EMAIL AND THREADED DISCUSSION GROUPS
WITH WYSIWYG EDITING TO USHER IN NEW ERA OF PERSONAL INTERNET PUBLISHING

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. (January 29, 1996) -- Netscape Communications
Corporation (NASDAQ: NSCP) today announced that the public beta version of
Netscape Navigator Gold 2.0 software is available for downloading from the
Netscape Internet site. Netscape Navigator Gold combines all of the
features of Netscape Navigator 2.0 with easy-to-use personal Internet
publishing capabilities, making it easy for people of all Internet skill
levels to create online documents including their own home pages. The new
product turns the millions of Internet users into personal Internet
publishers.

Netscape also announced separately today the Netscape "Gold Rush" Contest
that will award cash prizes of up to US$5,000 for the best pages created
using the new software. To enable people to post their home pages easily,
Netscape is teaming with a variety of leading Internet service providers
(ISPs) to provide personal Internet publishing services. Netscape has
created a Netscape Page Starter Site on its Internet site to provide
templates, tools and other resources to make personal Internet publishing
simple.

Netscape Navigator Gold enables every user on a corporate network or
"Intranet" to easily create and access HTML documents for threaded
discussion groups, electronic mail or the Web, facilitating communication
and collaboration within and beyond the corporation. In addition, users on
the Internet can access and create home pages, interactive email and news
postings all from within the Netscape Navigator Gold environment.

"Netscape Navigator Gold is the most functional Internet client available,
combining Web navigation, email and threaded discussion group capabilities
with point-and-click personal Internet publishing," said Mike Homer, vice
president of marketing for Netscape. "The millions of people who are
Internet content viewers today can now use Netscape Navigator Gold to
publish personal home pages -- creating, editing and publishing live
online documents quickly and easily. Building on all the capabilities of
Netscape Navigator 2.0, Netscape Navigator Gold takes users beyond
browsing into an active role on the Internet."

Netscape Navigator Gold includes all the features of Netscape Navigator
2.0, plus personal Internet publishing capabilities. The first beta
version will be available for Microsoft Windows 95 and Windows NT.
Netscape Navigator 2.0 features include:

-Interactive email, enabling users to both read and send standards- based
email. Users can embed live Internet hyperlinks into mail messages; list,
view, sort, drag and drop messages, and read messages offline.

-Integrated threaded discussion groups, allowing users to sort and list
messages from subscribed folders. Netscape Navigator Gold provides fully
threaded and MIME-compliant news reading and posting for multimedia news
articles.

-Support for Live Objects -- or interactive multimedia content -- including
Netscape inline plug-ins, Java applets and JavaScript. Netscape plug-ins,
currently being developed by hundreds of third- party developers, enable
new capabilities to be seamlessly integrated into Netscape Navigator. Java
applets and JavaScript scripts are mini-applications that enable live
updating, two-way interaction and platform-independent, client/server live
applications on the Internet.

-Frames, a page presentation capability that enables users to view
multiple, independently-scrollable panels on a single screen, each with
its own distinct Internet address. Frames enable content creators to
freeze a region of the screen in place as the user scrolls through
information on a page.

-Security Features, enabling users to send and receive encrypted
information.

-Enhanced Bookmarks interface, allowing users to drag and drop links from
any Web page into the bookmark window and arrange them using a
hierarchical folder-based interface. The interface makes it easy for users
to create and maintain a directory of their favorite internal or external
Web sites.

In addition, Netscape Navigator Gold adds the following publishing
features:

-Easy-to-use Editing Environment with "what you see is what you get"
(WYSIWYG) results. Netscape Navigator Gold enables users to jump- start
the process of creating a home page by downloading existing Internet pages
or any of the templates on the Netscape Page Starter Site and editing them
locally on their hard drive. To edit, users simply click on any part of a
downloaded page and drag and drop text, images and more elaborate items
such as Live Objects and links onto their own home page. The product is
the only Internet client that also enables users to drag and drop animated
GIFs onto a page.

-One-Button Publishing, allowing users to transfer onto the Internet at the
touch of a button all the files, links and images they use to create a
personal home page. This feature will be available in the final version of
Netscape Navigator Gold.

-Netscape Page Starter Site, providing users one-button access to a wealth
of resources including instructions, information, tools and answers to
frequently asked questions about creating their own home pages in Netscape
Navigator Gold and publishing them through one of the ISP hosting services
The site is located at http://home.netscape.com/home/starter.html

- Netscape Gold Rush Tool Chest, a collection of editable home page
templates, background color schemes and graphical images, as well as more
advanced tools such as Java applets and JavaScript scripts to make user
pages come alive. The collection is located on the Netscape Page Starter
Site.

-Netscape Page Wizard, an automated wizard that steps users quickly and
easily through the process of creating their own home page using HTML
forms. The wizard is located on the Netscape Page Starter Site.

The final release of Netscape Navigator Gold for Macintosh, Windows, and X
Window System operating environments is scheduled for the first half of
1996. The product can be purchased directly from Netscape and Netscape
authorized resellers. Pricing from Netscape starts at US$79, which
includes a 90-day warranty and customer support. Volume discounts are
available for multiple user licenses.
