MetaTools Sponsors Teen Digital Movie-Making Competition for Santa Barbara
International Film Festival

CARPINTERIA, CALIF., FEB. 13, 1996--MetaTools, Inc. (NASDAQ: MTLS) the
visual computing software company based in Santa Barbara county, has
founded and produced a county wide digital movie-making contest for the
area's high school students. The Teen Digital Movie-Making Competition is
a new program to be unveiled at the widely acclaimed Santa Barbara
International Film Festival which will be held March 8 - 16, 1996.

With the help of The Santa Barbara County Office of Education, eight county
high schools selected a total of 46 students who were given 21 hours of
instruction with digital imaging software donated by MetaTools and Adobe
Systems Inc., and were asked to put on directors' hats and create one
minute movies.

The students' movies will be judged by a seasoned panel of jurors from the
film, art and computer industries on February 17, 1996 at 11 am at
MetaTools' corporate headquarters located at 6303 Carpinteria Avenue,
Carpinteria, CA.

Jurors for the event include Michael Westmore, Paramount Pictures; Jim
Breen, member of the SB Film Festival Board of Directors; Kenneth Turan,
film critic for the LA Times; Dennison Bolay, President, Expertelligence;
Michael Ditmore, President, Systems and Software Consortium; Taz
Goldstein, Producer; and Victoria Vesna, Professor of Art, UCSB; Wayne
Kimbell, Kimbell Design Lab.

The screening for all of the movies made for the contest will be held on
March 16, 1996, at the Fiesta Five Theatres, located at 916 State Street,
where winners will be announced and presented their awards by an, as yet,
undisclosed Hollywood figure. Each member of the first place team will
receive a Macintosh computer, donated by Apple Computer Inc., and runners
up will receive multi-media and graphics software donated by MetaTools and
Adobe Systems, Inc.

Producing and sponsoring this unique program is one of a number of new
initiatives which MetaTools has undertaken to promote the development of
an information technology sector within the Santa Barbara economy. "We
believe it is of utmost importance to provide mechanisms for young people
to experience first hand the rapidly expanding opportunities that
information technology will provide in an effort to better prepare them
for jobs in creative, education and business arenas," said John Wilczak,
founder and CEO of MetaTools. "We will continue to foster relationships
between MetaTools and Santa Barbara's K-12, colleges and universities such
as UCSB by continuing to create internship opportunities and sending

information technology."
