SOLID STATE DISK DATABASE ACCELERATORS INTRODUCED BY MTI

High-speed storage systems reduce database I/O bottlenecks

ANAHEIM, CA - February 6, 1996 - MTI Technology Corporation (NASDAQ:MTIC)
has introduced a family of database accelerator storage systems that can
dramatically improve performance of relational database applications. The
MTI SSD Database Accelerators are modular solid state disk subsystems that
provide high-speed access to data by eliminating the rotational and head
seek delays found in magnetic hard disk storage systems. The new products
deliver near-instantaneous access times, thereby significantly reducing
I/O bottlenecks that can slow the performance of database applications
such as on-line transaction processing, decision support and data
warehousing. Several models are available that operate with a wide range
of UNIX-based open systems or platforms running VMS making them an ideal
choice for companies operating in heterogeneous environments. The Database
Accelerators use MTI's StorageWare architecture and complement the
company's broad range of high-availability, cross-platform,
enterprise-wide data storage and backup solutions.

The MTI SSD Database Accelerators use high-speed semiconductor memory and
can perform up to 2,500 I/Os per second (more that 10,000 I/Os at the
device level) which is up to 25 times faster than typical magnetic disk
subsystems. This outstanding performance makes them a perfect match for
heavily accessed database tables and indices. With industry-standard
SCSI-2 Fast/Wide interfaces, the units will easily integrate with existing
platforms without modifications to applications or operating systems. The
high-speed storage systems are compatible with major relational database
management systems including Oracle, Sybase, Informix, and CA-OpenIngres.

MTI's President and Chief Executive Officer, Steve Hamerslag, noted,
"Traditional disk-based data storage cannot keep pace with today's
I/O-intensive database applications. Although CPU performance has
increased dramatically over the years, disk performance has seen smaller
gains. This I/O bottleneck cripples database performance when making
frequent random access to files. The MTI SSD Database Accelerators use
solid state memory instead of magnetic disk drives to eliminate
constraints thereby improving CPU utilization and database performance. In
addition, built-in failure-tolerant features ensure high availability of
mission-critical information."

All models satisfy high-availability requirements with memory battery
backup to ensure against data corruption in the event of a power failure.
Redundant power supplies and battery-backed power supplies are options on
some models to provide additional failure safeguards. Some models can be
configured with two I/O controllers for dual-port operations. With a
single host, dual-porting provides increased throughput and channel
redundancy for an extra level of failure protection. In a dual-host
environment with appropriate software, one system can take control and
service the applications of both systems if one host fails, or two systems
can share a single unit to provide cost savings.

Models are available in tabletop (up to 533MB) or rackmount (up to 2GB)
packaging for UNIX-based systems including Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Sun and
Silicon Graphics. Another rackmount model (up to 1.1GB) specifically
configured for VMS-based platforms allows DEC CI, DSSI or FDDI
connectivity when combined with MTI StingRay Storage Servers. All models
use the same 66MB, 133MB and 200MB memory modules. Base unit list prices
range from $6,600 to $15,840 and are available for shipment in mid-April.
Another lower-priced member of the product family, the MTI 9200 DBA, is
suitable for less demanding applications.
