MULTI-TECH ANNOUNCES DATATALKER DT101/DT102 MODELS

MOUNDS VIEW, MINNESOTA -- January 30, 1996 -- Multi-Tech Systems, Inc., a
leading data communications technology company, announces the release of
its new DATATALKER models: the rack mounted DT101R and DT102R cards and
the standalone DT101 and DT102. These products offer a number of features
that provide enhanced voice/data/fax capability over existing SDLC/HDLC
links, i.e., bridges, routers, muxes. The products will begin shipping
first quarter of 1996. Prices begin at $1299 and $1499 U.S. for the rack
mounted and standalone models, respectively.

"When adding voice and fax to existing asynchronous or synchronous (SDLC)
networks, the DataTalker uses the communication links already in place for
datacommunications," states Raghu Sharma, founder and President of
Multi-Tech Systems, Inc. "For instance, LAN bridges that operate using
SDLC protocol, convey only data. Voice and fax calls had to be made using
normal POTS service. By adding DataTalkers at both ends of the link and
connecting it to both data and PBX facilities, voice and fax services can
be added virtually free. Depending on the voice and fax service used
between the locations, the DataTalker investment can pay for itself in a
matter of weeks or months."

Designed with flexibility in mind, DataTalker can be customized to meet the
customer's demands. The base configuration of each DataTalker features on
data and one voice/fax channel, with an option of a second voice channel.
The customer can then specify one of the following: an ISDN composite link
terminal adapter that connects to a Basic Rate Interface (BRI) service; a
56K bps composite digital service unit (DSU); or a V.34 28.8K bps
composite link modem.

The ISDN link terminal adapter features several advancements including a
builT-in NT1 interface to provide a connection between the phone company's
central office switch and the customer's site. In addition, it employs
BONDing (Bandwidth On Demand) technology that allows the two "B" channels
to be combined into a single 128K bps composite link.

"One of the most significant features of these new products is Dial On
Demand," says Sharma. "This feature automatically detects and sets up an
ISDN connection between local and remote sites. The connection is then
automatically dropped upon voice/fax disconnect or when no data is
transferred for a predetermined period of time. This provides the
cost-saving benefit of having ISDN connected only when service is
required."

Dial On Demand works under one of four conditions: when receiving a ring
(FXO), when data is present, when going off-hook (FXS), and when PBX trunk
is accessed (E&M).

To facilitate connections with other ISDN devices, the ISDN link terminal
adapter supports the V.120 protocol and complies with National ISDN-1
standards and switches, including AT&T 5ESS ISDN, Northern Telecom
DMS-100*, and Siemens Stromberg-Carlson EWSD*.

Standard features of each DataTalker model include FXS (phone, fax, or key
telephone) and FXO (PBX station side) interfaces on each fax/voice
channel, E&M (PBX trunk side), and an RS232C/V.24 serial port that
delivers synchronous speeds of 64K bps or asynchronous speeds of 115.2K
bps. The models also feature Multi-Tech's patent-pending Advanced Priority
Statistical Multiplexing scheme which allows voice or fax packets to
interrupt data transmissions for near-immediate transmission. Both models
also have a V.24 / V.35 composite port to connect external modems, DSU's
and ISDN terminal adapters.

The RackTalker (model CC101) is a rack-mountable card cage designed to let
users create their own consolidated, economical communications solution.
RackTalker accepts up to eight hot-swappable DataTalker concentrators
(DT101R and DT102R). Each card features its own power supply, for enhanced
reliability and performance. In the unlikely event that a power supply
fails, only the card powered by the failed supply is affected. Although
the system has multiple power supplies, the rack has only one AC power
cord. The internal link options for the stand-alone versions also apply to
the rack-mount models.
