READY-TO-RUN DATABASES ALLOW CONSUMERS TO TAP THE POWER OF MICROSOFT ACCESS
FOR WINDOWS 95

No-Charge Database Helps Crossword Puzzlers Finish Faster

REDMOND, WASH. - JAN. 29, 1996 - Microsoft Corp. today announced the
availability of five Microsoft Access for the Windows 95 operating system
Ready-to-Run databases that customers can download at no charge from the
Microsoft home page. These databases do not require a previous
installation of Microsoft Access to work, and they allow new users to
experience the power of databases risk-free. The Ready-to-Run databases
use a run-time version of Microsoft Access for Windows 95, the database
that makes it easy for all levels of users to manage, find and share
information.

One of the databases launched today, National Puzzle Day, is the Microsoft
Access Crossword Puzzle Solver, which includes more than 20,000 word and
clue combinations from the New York Times. With this database, users can
search for puzzle answers by typing in the length of the word or searching
on the clue itself. Nearly 50 million people attempt crossword puzzles
each day in the United States, and Microsoft Access can not only help them
finish, but finish faster.

Other Ready-to-Run databases announced today include a Music Collection,
Contact Manager, Order Entry and Wine List.

"We developed these Ready-to-Run databases as a way to demonstrate to
consumers how beneficial a database can be in everyday life," said Tod
Nielsen, Microsoft Access general manager. "We want everyone to appreciate
how easy it is to use Microsoft Access to organize and complete tasks such
as doing crossword puzzles and keeping track of a music collection."

Many people use address books, datebooks, card files and tabbed notebooks
to manage information, all of which are paper forms of databases.
Computerized databases such as Microsoft Access can be described as
electronic filing cabinets and are far more efficient at organizing and
retrieving information than their paper-based counterparts.
