LEXMARK DELIVERS 6 PPM LASER AT 4 PPM PRICE

Optra E raises value equation for 600 dpi desktop laser printers

LEXINGTON, KY., JANUARY 29, 1996 -- Lexmark International Inc. today
announced the Optra E, a compact new business class laser printer. Optra E
rounds out Lexmark's award-winning Optra family with true 600 dpi, 6
pages-per-minute performance and exceptional paper handling for the low
street price of just $549.

Optra E is for individuals in businesses, government and education who
require business class printing from a personal desktop printer. These
customers need the extra input drawer and 6 ppm performance that competing
printers in Optra E's price range can't provide. Street prices for other
desktop lasers with Optra E's capabilities are as much as 60 percent
higher than Optra E.

Lexmark offers two versions of the Optra E. The base model Optra E
provides up to three paper input sources, and includes enhanced PCL 5 and
PPDS emulations. In addition to these features, a second Optra E model
comes pre-configured with 1 MB flash memory for use in a forms-intensive
environment where Lexmark's flash memory technology significantly improves
printing performance.

BUSINESS CLASS PAPER HANDLING

The Optra E's versatile paper handling shatters the myth that low cost
printing limits the user to only one or two media types. The Optra E can
print on a wide variety of media, including transparencies, index cards,
heavy stock, envelopes and occasional labels. It handles letter and legal
sized media, and can also print on paper as small as 3 x 5 inches. It
comes standard with 150-sheet front input and 100-sheet front output
capacities, a manual input tray for quick printing of optional media, and
an optional 250-sheet second tray that expands the input up to 400
sheets.

The Optra E's high-yield toner cartridge delivers 3,000 printed pages,
based on 5 percent coverage, and the photoconductor unit prints 20, 000
pages. In addition, the DiamondFine toner cartridge helps to ensure crisp
text and sharp graphics. This superior print quality significantly
advances the art of low-cost printing at the business class level. The
printer also includes a user-selected toner saver mode to reduce toner
usage.

IN THE OPTRA TRADITION

Like its fellow Optra family members, the Optra E brings price, performance
and quality to its product class. It comes standard with a wide selection
of scaleable fonts. The Optra E is easy to manage from the user console
via Lexmark's highly acclaimed printer management software, MarkVision for
Windows 3.1x. MarkVision provides desktop printer users with fast and easy
set-up, error detection, recovery and status feedback. The Optra E is also
plug and play compatible with Windows 95.

The Optra E easily handles most print jobs with its standard 1 MB of
memory, thanks to the combination of RAMSmart advanced memory compression
and the Optra E's exclusive Quick Print + mode when using Lexmark's
Windows 3.1x driver. The Quick Print + mode uses the power of the PC to
enhance the performance of Windows print jobs while speeding the process
of getting the first printer page into print in a manner that reduces the
amount of memory Optra E requires for the job. Printer memory is
expandable to 5 MB in both models to optimize performance for the most
complex image applications.

Lexmark designed the Optra E with the environment in mind, and it complies
fully with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star program.
Optra E's toner cartridges and photoconductor drums are also recyclable
through Lexmark's Operation ReSource program.

The Optra E includes a one-year LexExpress or customer carry-in warranty.
LexExpress guarantees customers a replacement printer within 24 hours when
they ship their printer to a Lexmark facility for repair. Optra E printers
are available now from authorized Lexmark distributors and dealers.
