INTEL AND MOTOROLA BASED AViiON ENTERPRISE SERVER LINES TO SUPPORT NEW
CLARiiON DISK ARRAYS

Will Increase Storage, Performance, and High Availability

WESTBORO, Mass., February 12, 1996 -- Data General Corporation said today
that its powerful new CLARiiON Series 2000 high-end disk arrays will be
supported by both its Intel and Motorola based AViiON enterprise server
lines.

The new CLARiiON 2800 and 2900 models deliver up to 2.5 times the
throughput, or I/Os per second, of previous CLARiiON models, and reduce
response time by more than half.

The CLARiiON disk arrays support up to twenty 3.5 inch SCSI drives capable
of storing 80 gigabytes (80 billion characters) of data per chassis. This
will be expanded to 180 gigabytes per chassis later this year when new
higher capacity drives are introduced. At that time, the maximum optional
cache level will also increase from 64 megabytes per storage processor to
256 megabytes.

"An environment that combines the new CLARiiON 2000 line of disk arrays
with AViiON servers offers the extensive reliability, high availability,
performance, and storage features required to meet the most demanding of
mission-critical enterprise computing needs," said Dave Ellenberger, vice
president of Corporate Marketing for Data General.

The new disk arrays incorporate such leading CLARiiON technology as:

Completely redundant components to eliminate single points of failure

Dual-active storage processors with protected cache
Concurrent support for multi-RAID configurations (0,1,3,5 and 1/0)

 Patented parity handling algorithms

The CLARiiON 2800 and 2900 disk arrays will be available with the entire
line of Data General's Intel based AViiON systems, and the mid-range and
high-end Motorola based AViiON servers, including the AV 5500, AV 8500, AV
9500 and AV 10000.

CLARiiON disk arrays combined with AViiON servers running the DG/UX
operating system enable Data General to provide high-availability
solutions to meet customer requirements for application uptime and cost
constraints. These solutions allow customers to incrementally increase
application and data availability by adding software a hardware components
all the way to multi-system DG/UX Clusters. DG/UX Clusters deliver 7X24
application and data availability, and present a single system image to
users and system administrators, easing user access to information and
systems management.

About the Intel based AViiON Servers

The Intel based AViiON line includes the AV 5800, which supports up to
eight 133MHz Pentium processors, at the high end; as well as two other
enterprise servers, the AV 4700 and AV 4800, which support up to four
133MHz Pentium processors.

The Intel based AViiON servers run more than 15,000 applications, including
all the leading enterprise and database software. The list includes UNIX
software from such leading companies as Computer Associates, Informix,
Oracle, PeopleSoft, Pick Systems, Progress, Sybase, Tivoli, Unidata and
VMark; as well as approximately 7,000 shrink-wrapped applications
available with Windows NT Server.

Data General, which is based in Westboro, Massachusetts, specializes in
