DIGITAL ANNOUNCES PRIORIS ZX 5133MP HIGH-PERFORMANCE PC SERVER

Announces New Pentium Models of Prioris HX, LX and XL PC Servers

MAYNARD, Mass., January 30, 1996 -- Digital Equipment Corporation today
announced the Prioris ZX 5133MP superserver, the premier product in a new
line of Symmetric Multiprocessing (SMP) enterprise PC servers that will
carry the "ZX" designation. Based on the 133MHz Pentium microprocessor,
the Prioris ZX 5133MP is targeted at enterprise-class applications that
require the highest level of performance and reliability. The company also
announced the immediate availability of new Pentium processor models of
the Prioris LX, Prioris XL Server and Prioris HX PC servers.

"While raw system performance is a always a significant factor --
especially in the enterprise server area -- high-end PC superservers such
as our ZX series must be augmented with new technologies and
industry-standard software solutions that improve their manageability,
fault-resilience and ease-of-use," said Duane Dickhut, vice president of
Digital's PC server product line. "Digital's unrivaled expertise in
Windows NT clustering and advanced database technology, as well as our
roster of strategic partnerships with industry leaders such as Microsoft,
Novell and Oracle, has uniquely positioned our company to lead the way in
Intel-based enterprise computing."

The newest addition to Digital's award-winning Intel server family, the
Prioris ZX 5133MP is a high-performance, high- availability, scalable
superserver for resource-intensive applications such as database
transaction processing, decision support, groupware, internet access, and
general file and print or e-mail services for large LANs. The Prioris ZX
is optimized as a robust line-of-business application server ideal for
large branch offices and remote sites in a variety of industries including
financial services, retail, manufacturing, transportation, communications
and government, and for organizations migrating to a client/server
environment using Windows NT or UNIX.

The new server incorporates Intel's industry-standard Multi-processing
Specification (MPS 1.1 or 1.4) and supports SMP scalability from one to
four 133MHz Pentium processors. Each CPU is equipped with up to one MB of
dedicated secondary level, two-way write-back cache for maximum
performance in database-intensive applications. Extending Digital's
leadership position in PCI technology, the new system features a
state-of-the-art dual peer PCI bus and integrated dual Fast/Wide SCSI
controllers to provide maximum throughput for heavy file sharing and
database-intensive tasks. As with all of Digital's Prioris PC servers, the
Prioris ZX 5133MP delivers maximum investment longevity through balanced
system design, a highly expandable architecture and robust
fault-tolerance.

Enterprise Application ISV Partnerships

To complement its world-class hardware offerings, Digital is working
closely with key ISVs to offer customers complete server and software
solutions for critical applications that best exploit the Prioris ZX
5133MP server's unique abilities in enterprise-class applications. Among
these network operating system and applications partners are Lotus,
Microsoft, Novell, Oracle and SCO. Specific distribution arrangements and
solution set availability will be announced throughout early 1996.

In addition, the Prioris ZX 5133MP is currently engaged in the SAP/R3
certification process and the company continues its leadership in
developing Windows NT clustering solutions by leveraging its own
engineering expertise and experience, as well as its cooperative work with
Microsoft.

Scalability, Expandability, Manageability, Compatibility

The Prioris ZX PC server provides the power and throughput to tackle the
most demanding server applications through expandable processor, disk,
memory and I/O subsystems, as well as optional advanced RAID
configurations. This flexibility helps protect customers' technology
investments as demand multimedia database and high-traffic Internet
applications become more prevalent. Digital's new superserver comes
standard with ECC memory and a maximum memory capacity of 768MB. The new
system also features nine total bus-master I/O slots (five PCI for maximum
performance, four EISA for legacy card compatibility); up to 28GB internal
storage capacity with external support for up to one terabyte; 11 total
drive bays including seven hot-swappable bays; optional redundant power
supply, standard redundant cooling and a rackmount-ready chassis.

Like all Prioris PC servers, each Prioris ZX 5133MP superserver will
include -- at no extra cost -- Digital's ServerWORKS Manager, an
easy-to-use server and network management software package, and
ServerWORKS Quick Launch, a CD-ROM suite of utilities that automates
network operating system installation and the configuration of Digital
Prioris PC servers. Digital's Remote Server Manager option provides
out-of-band server management and control for remote or distributed sites
with limited on-site LAN administration capabilities. In addition,
Digital's rackmount option allows any combination of Prioris servers and
external storage devices to be installed in a rack without modification to
the systems' chassis or wiring.
