Compaq Lights Up Texas Home Computer Show With "Smart Home" Demonstration
-- Exhibit Highlights Revolutionary CEBus Home Automation Technology

HOUSTON, February 7, 1996 -- Imagine what your life would be like if you
could make your home work for you 24 hours a day. You could wake up to a
hot cup of coffee, a warm shower and your favorite news broadcast; monitor
your home while you're at work or on vacation; and at night, lock up and
turn off the lights from the comfort of your bed. With the advent of
affordable and reliable home automation technology, families of today and
the future can make the "Smart Home" of their dreams a reality.

Reinforcing the PC's emerging role as the primary home information and
control center, Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE:CPQ) today announced it
is demonstrating PC-based household automation capabilities in a home
built specifically for the Texas Home & Garden Show and Texas Home
Computer Show (in the George R. Brown Convention Center, February 9-11).
Technology based on Intellon Corporation's implementation of the Consumer
Electronics Bus (CEBus) and AMP Incorporated's SmartONE products has been
integrated with a Compaq Presario personal computer in a 2,000-square-foot
home. This innovative home was designed by Roger Rasbach of Houston's
Rasbach Design Group and built by Provident Construction, using materials
that greatly minimize energy consumption and environmental waste.

As a centerpiece of the shows, the "Smart Home" demonstrates how home
automation management systems can enrich families' lives with greater
efficiency, convenience, comfort, safety, security and manageability as
well as offer substantial savings in time, energy, and utility costs.
Recent technological advancements have made the implementation of CEBus
standard features more affordable, easy to use and simple to install in
homes of today and the future, proving that real value and utility are now
available to the consumer. From various locations in their houses,
consumers will be able to answer the phone or front door, play music,
close the curtains, control lighting, manage power consumption and much
more.

The home's automation and management system interface is a Compaq Presario,
centralizing the control of telecommunications, consumer electronics
entertainment, lighting, energy utilization, security and other
appliances. This automation demonstration is centered in the living room,
where typical home entertainment systems including a TV, VCR and audio
equipment are managed by a Presario. Presarios furnished by Compaq run
additional applications in other rooms of the house, with an Internet link
to the Houston Chronicle Interactive Web site, as well as phone and fax
communications and food preparation equipment in the kitchen.

"Compaq is committed to CEBus technology as an open industry standard,"
said Bob Stearns, senior vice president, Technology, Corporate Development
and Marketing for Compaq Computer Corporation. "Our demonstration
highlights Compaq's vision of employing the PC as the centralized
household management, education, and personal productivity tool in homes
of today and tomorrow."

In current products, CEBus technology uses the home's existing AC power
wiring as well as radio frequency technology to transmit digital control
and information signals between a PC and the controlled devices. The
advantages of CEBus over other technologies include increased reliability
and bi-directionality, meaning that the PC not only controls the device,
but the device can report back to the PC. New developments of the CEBus
standard will also advance the boundaries of connecting emerging in-home
consumer LANs (Local Area Networks) to outside services.

In a recent agreement, Compaq announced that it had made an equity
investment in Intellon, and that the two companies have reached a
technology commitment aimed at making Compaq technology the dominant home
interface device by providing the core network infrastructure in the home.
Compaq and AMP are both investors in Intellon and members of Intellon's
Technology Advisory Board. Compaq, Intellon and AMP are also members of
the CEBus Industry Council, and are successfully working together with the
Council to expand the application and uses of the CEBus standard.

"As the only open industry standard, CEBus is pushing the boundaries of
home automation, providing the in-home infrastructure and communications
path for today's and tomorrow's information highway," said James Vander
Mey, founder and CEO of Intellon. "This demonstration illustrates how the
CEBus standard is a critical technology in providing reliable monitoring
and control on the in-home network."

Intellon provides the platform and tools for developers of CEBus- compliant
products. Its innovative Spread Spectrum Carrier technology was selected
by the Electronic Industries Association (EIA) as the power line and radio
frequency components of the CEBus Standard. Intellon's CEBus-compliant
components and tools are widely used by manufacturers of lighting
controls, security systems, electric meters and consumer electronics.
Among the leading manufacturers in this arena is AMP Incorporated, which
is supplying its SmartONE, CEBus- compliant application for this
demonstration. AMP applies state- of-the-art technology to more than
100,000 products that individually and synergistically provide
interconnection solutions ranging from simple electrical terminals to wide
and local area network products and systems.
