COGNOS AND KPMG PEAT MARWICK LLP ANNOUNCE RELATIONSHIP

BURLINGTON, MASS., FEBRUARY 15, 1996 -- Cognos (NASDAQ:COGNF:TSE:CSN), the
leading provider of business intelligence tools, today announced a product
integration relationship with KPMG Peat Marwick LLP. The worldwide
agreement enables KPMG to resell Cognos' award-winning PowerPlay" 4.1 and
Impromptu" 3.0 with KPMG's activity-based costing applications suite,
Profit Manager.

"This is a strategic alliance for KPMG, as our clients are increasingly
demanding business intelligence solutions that can be implemented quickly
and immediately contribute to the bottom line," said Ralph Canter, a
partner in the Activity-Based Management practice of KPMG's Strategic
Consulting unit. "Working with Cognos, we will be able to help clients
impact their business performance with the leading business intelligence
tools on the market."

KPMG has integrated Cognos' Business Intelligence tools with Task, one of
the three modules in Profit Manager. KPMG expects to integrate these tools
with the other two modules, Plus and Best, in the coming months.

KPMG's Profit Manager Task is activity analysis software that allows users
to load and analyze detailed tasks and activities; calculate and assign
performance metrics to an activity or task; and associate employee and
other resource costs to activities and tasks.

According to Alan Rottenberg, Cognos' senior vice president for Business
Intelligence Tools, "KPMG's activity-based management expertise combined
with our best-of-breed business intelligence tools offer clients a
powerful way to analyze business performance. We are truly excited about
this opportunity to team with such a premier professional services firm."

As part of this agreement, KPMG is aggressively training personnel from its
Activity Based Management and Decision Support Systems practices in
Cognos' Business Intelligence tools. KPMG and Cognos are already working
on several activity-based costing and performance measurement clients. The
two companies are also exploring applications for business intelligence
solutions within other KPMG practices.

Impromptu's intuitive user interface gives "self-service" database querying
and reporting to all levels of users in an enterprise. Its new features
benefit users by giving them fast and simple access to corporate data, and
"instant" reports. PowerPlay gives managers the ability to quickly and
easily explore and understand corporate data to reach decisions faster and
gain competitive insight. Ideal for managers and MIS professionals alike,
PowerPlay can be used without the need for programming and can be deployed
with little administrative overhead throughout an organization.
