Document Management Across the Web Emerges As Key Issue at Documation '96

Conference to focus on strategies for managing on-line documents

MARSHFIELD, Mass., February 5, 1996-CAP Ventures and the Graphic
Communications Association (GCA), sponsors of Documation '96, today
announced that the third annual conference and exposition will focus on
the transformation of the document management industry by the World Wide
Web and the emerging technologies for managing and more effectively using
the vast number of documents on-line. Key speakers from organizations such
as Chevron, the International Monetary Fund, United Airlines and major
industry suppliers will discuss implementation strategies and the
technical and cultural issues that are moving document management to the
top of the corporate information system agenda. Documation '96 will be
held at the Long Beach Convention Center in Long

"The phenomenal growth in the creation and delivery of electronic
information now makes it imperative for businesses to implement systems
that can manage these on-line documents," said Frank Gilbane, Documation
conference chair. "The explosion of Web documents is creating a new
infrastructure: for electronic commerce, and a new set of challenges as
documents become more interactive. This is uncharted territory for
information system managers."

In order for businesses to effectively conduct business operations over the
Internet, they must deal with a broad range of issues, from managing
multiple data types to distributing documents both electronically and on
paper to managing version control and security. Documation '96 will
provide a forum for information technology professionals from a variety of
vertical industries to discuss compound document management application
issues, strategies, and experiences.

The Documation conference series is focused specifically on the major
trends and issues in compound documents, the fastest growing class of
digital documents. Unlike paper pages or static digital images, compound
documents contain different types of data, often from multiple sources,
that can be re-used and customized according to the means of output -
whether published on paper, CD ROMs, LANs or the Internet. Compound
documents may contain numerous kinds of media, such as text,
illustrations, photographs and other images, video and sound, and each of
these has special management requirements.

The conference's technical and management sessions will cover a broad range
of topics, including:

* Corporate publishing on the Internet - issues and case studies
* Convergence of product data management and document management
* Advances in information retrieval
* The role of databases in document management systems
* HTML and SGML - when to use which
* Integrating workflow and document management
* Publishing in mixed paper and electronic environments
* Managing multimedia documents
* Component-based document management vs. file-based approaches

Additional breakout sessions will provide corporate case study
presentations on technical documentation, customer service documentation,
proposals, policies and procedures, on-demand printing, and publishing for
profit. A separate tutorial track held before the opening of the general
sessions provides attendees with introductory material on document
management, workflow, electronic delivery, corporate library services,
Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), and interoperability standards.
