Bay Networks Provides Livenet's ATM and FDDI Backbone Network at Comnet
'96

-- Delivers Internet, Switched Ethernet and ATM Connectivity --

WASHINGTON, D.C., January 30, 1996 -- Bay Networks today announced that its
multiprotocol router, intelligent hub, and high-speed switch products are
supporting the ATM and FDDI backbone for LiveNet '96, the advanced,
enterprise network on view at the three-day ComNet '96 Conference and
Exhibition in Washington, D.C. In addition, the company has provided
networking technical support to assist the multivendor team in the
planning, installation, and operation of LiveNet.

LiveNet offers both show attendees and exhibitors a live, real-world
example of connectivity between legacy and advanced network technologies
in an enterprise-modeled network. As the showcase network for ComNet '96,
LiveNet provides a complex, heterogeneous corporate network environment,
supporting all vendors, including those running enterprise applications
such as multimedia, video conferencing, groupware and messaging for
business departments.

Bay Networks has deployed a Backbone Concentrator Node (BCN") router with
Virtual Network Routing for the ATM network, a System 5000(tm) hub, and 4
LattisCell(tm) ATM switches throughout the LiveNet demonstration. In
addition, the company has connected 2 Fast Ethernet LattisSwitch(tm)
switches to the BCN router, providing terminals on the show floor with
switched Ethernet access to the Internet.

Bay Networks' internetworking products support a range of applications,
demonstrations and network services operating in FDDI, Ethernet, SMDS,
wireless, and ATM environments.

Building ATM and FDDI Backbones

Bay Networks' BCN router, equipped with an integrated ATM Link Module,
delivers Virtual Network Routing, multivendor connectivity, and
interoperability in LiveNet's ATM and FDDI backbone networks. The BCN
router also offers full Internet service via a connection to the PSI Net,
the Internet service provider for LiveNet, as well as access to SMDS
services provided by MCI.

Supporting a variety of video and other high bandwidth applications, Bay
Networks is also exhibiting the connectivity capabilities of its
LattisCell ATM switches interoperating with the company's BCN routers and
other multivendor ATM switches.

"By deploying Bay Networks routing and switching products throughout the
collapsed backbone and providing high-speed Internet connectivity for the
entire LiveNet, we are able to demonstrate emerging technologies in a
real-time, real-world enterprise-wide internetworking solution," stated
Thaddeus Bissell, Bay Networks' networking specialist assigned to the
LiveNet team. "The LiveNet gives us the opportunity to confirm our
commitment to industry standards, multivendor interoperability, and
multivendor connectivity."
