ASCEND COMMUNICATIONS AND MCI TO DEMONSTRATE MOBILE REMOTE ACCESS
CAPABILITIES AT COMNET

Demo to Highlight Cellular Access to MCI's Hyperstream Frame Relay Network
Using Ascend's MAX 4000 WAN Access Switch

WASHINGTON, (COMNET '96) JANUARY 29, 1996 -- Ascend Communications, Inc.
(NASDAQ - ASND) a leading provider of remote networking products, and MCI
Telecommunications Corp., based here, announced today that they will
demonstrate wireless remote LAN access this week at the Washington
Convention Center in MCI Booth #832. MCI will show cellular access
enhancements to its Hyperstream Remote LAN Dial Service by dialing into
Ascend's MAX 4000 WAN access switch, which supports the MNP- 10EC protocol
(Microcom Networking Protocol 10 Enhanced Cellular).

"With the addition of the MNP-10EC capability to the MAX platform, Ascend
and MCI are enabling dependable cellular connections to MCI's Hyperstream
Frame Relay network," said Bernie Schneider, vice president of marketing
at Ascend. "This gives mobile users the convenience of remote LAN access
from virtually any location in the U.S. Together, Ascend and MCI are
working towards the goal of making remote access ubiquitous for today's
corporate environment."

Ascend's MAX 4000 WAN access switch is currently used as part of MCI's
Hyperstream Remote LAN Access Dial Service. The MAX provides integrated
analog and digital access from the public switched telephone network
allowing MCI to deliver remote dial- up access services to their Frame
Relay customers.

"MCI Data Services views circuit switched cellular as the most practical
solution for today's wireless data networking needs," said Steven Von
Rump, vice president of marketing for MCI's Data Services Division.
"Today, circuit switched cellular service is available ubiquitously
throughout the U.S. Roaming from region to region is easy; user equipment
is affordable and easy to use, and throughput rates are exceptional. With
wireless data access services, mobile salespeople reduce cycle time,
traveling professionals improve productivity, and field engineers increase
responsiveness to customers."

"Circuit switched cellular access provides users with a powerful
competitive tool -- reliable and easy-to-use wireless access to their
network LANs and host computers," added Von Rump. "With the cellular
circuit switched enhancement Ascend has demonstrated on its MAX 4000,
customers will have wireless capabilities, in addition to analog and ISDN,
for accessing our Frame Relay network. The wireless data access solution
is completely compatible with the customer's network infrastructure --
making the customer's implementation of cellular circuit switched access
simple and straightforward."
