Apple Showcases Technology Leadership at World's Largest MacWorld Expo

New Chairman and CEO Gil Amelio Underscores Commitment to Japanese Market

MACWORLD TOKYO--February 22, 1996--Apple Computer, Inc. wowed Japanese
audiences yesterday with an abundant display of new and innovative Apple
technologies at MacWorld Tokyo. Dr. David Nagel, senior vice president of
Worldwide Research and Development, delivered the keynote address,
focusing on Internet solutions, Asia specific products and Apple's future
platform directions. The address included an appearance by Dr. Gil Amelio,
Apple's new chairman and CEO, who marked his first official visit to Japan
with a strong message of support to the Japanese audience.

"As Apple's second largest market, Japan is essential to our overall
business," said Amelio. "I'm pleased to make Japan my first international
trip on behalf of Apple and look forward to meeting our key customers,
partners and developers here at MacWorld Expo."

MacWorld Tokyo, which runs through February 24, is the largest MacWorld
Expo in the world and is expected to draw record-breaking crowds of over
170,000 attendees.

APPLE ON THE INTERNET = EASE OF USE

In his keynote address, Nagel reiterated Apple's commitment to providing
customers worldwide with an Apple experience on the Internet.
Demonstrating Apple products including CyberDog, Newton on the Internet,
Pippin on the Internet, as well as Adobe's PageMill-J (Japanese version),
Nagel showed Japanese customers just how easy it is to customize an
Internet interface, collect and organize Internet resources and publish
information.

"Apple will continue to be ahead of the technology curve and produce some
of the industry's most innovative products," he said. "Our global
operations give Apple a clear advantage in this, with our core research
and development being done in Cupertino and for our Asian products in
Singapore," he added.

ASIAN SOLUTIONS--APPLE LEADERSHIP

Nagel pointed out that Apple, being a global corporation, must create
products and technologies that are relevant to specific markets and
cultures. Two examples demonstrated were the Chinese Dictation Kit and
Apple's Korean Language Kit technology.

The Chinese Dictation Kit is a speech dictation system that converts
Mandarin (Putonghua) speech into simplified or traditional Chinese text.
The system, which offers unrivaled ease- of-use, speed and accuracy, is
the most affordable Chinese dictation product on the market, and requires
no additional hardware to operate on a Power Macintosh.

Also provided was a technology demonstration of Apple's Korean language
capabilities. Soon to be a final product from Apple, this technology
enables customers to enter, edit and print text in Korean or mix Korean
with other languages in the same document.

A LOOK TO THE FUTURE--APPLE'S PLATFORM OF TOMORROW

Nagel concluded his address by giving the audience a first-time look at the
Mac OS running on a prototype built to the PowerPC platform specifications
(formerly known as CHRP). In addition, attendees received a glimpse of
Copland--Apple's next generation OS--both in English and in Japanese, as
well as a localized version of OpenDoc. Dr. Nagel also demonstrated the
music enhancements which will be part of QuickTime 2.2.

Summary of Additional announcements:

QUICKTIME MUSIC ARCHITECTURE

Apple announced significant enhancements to the QuickTime Music
Architecture (QTMA) that will enable title developers to easily enhance
their content by creating their own musical identity. These enhancements
will be part of the QuickTime 2.2 release expected later this spring.
QuickTime is the multi-platform standard used by multimedia software tool
vendors and content creators to store, edit and play synchronized
graphics, sound, video, text and music in multimedia applications and on
the Internet.

OPENDOC-J

OpenDoc-J is the Japanese version of Apple's OpenDoc component software. To
date, approximately 50 Japanese developers have committed to developing
parts and containers using this localized version of OpenDoc, and eleven
developers are showing parts and containers using OpenDoc- J at MacWorld
Tokyo. Apple will commence distribution of the Japanese version of OpenDoc
through Apple Japan's OpenDoc home page starting March 1.
