Systems

Font & Function to Offer 50% Discount on Newest Releases

Mountain View, Calif. (February 12, 1996) (Nasdaq:ADBE)--Adobe Systems
Incorporated today announced the immediate availability of six new
typeface packages from the Adobe Type Library, including Adobe Jenson,
Adobe's contemporary revival of the typefaces of Nicolas Jenson and
Ludovico degli Arrighi, in an expanded multiple master type family. Adobe
Jenson and Adobe Jenson Expert are immediately available for the Macintosh
platform. As an Adobe Original, Adobe Jenson offers exceptional
versatility and readability for a full range of type composition needs.
Also from the Adobe Type Library are four additional new typeface packages
which include Bulmer and Bulmer Expert Collection, the Eccentric et al
collection of three designs and the Ocean Sans multiple master package.
The new packages can be purchased through Adobe's Font & Function type
catalog (Winter 1996 issue) at 1-800-445-8787. For a limited time, Adobe
Jenson and the Jenson Expert Collection are offered for $99 and $79,
respectively, a 50% savings off of the suggested retail price. When
purchased together, users can save an additional 20%.

"As a multiple master typeface, Adobe Jenson makes it easy for me to solve
even the most difficult design problems," said Margery Cantor, noted book
designer and typographer. "The combined power of weight and optical size
axes are especially useful in supplying a pallet of unified type for body
text, as well as title pages, headlines, book jackets, footnotes and
indices. Adobe Jenson is an impeccable text composition family designed
with attention to historical detail, providing powerful tools for the
needs of today's designers."

Renaissance Revival Combines Classic Elegance with Modern Technology

Adobe Jenson joins the Adobe Originals collection of historic revivals that
currently includes Adobe Garamond and Adobe Caslon as the first multiple
master revival in the Adobe Type Library. Created by award winning Adobe
type designer Robert Slimbach, Adobe Jenson embodies the best qualities of
renaissance calligraphy and typographic precision. This multiple master
typeface family, with design axes for weight and optical size, provides
designers with unprecedented typographic control and flexibility.

Nicolas Jenson's type of 1470 was chosen as a model for Adobe's revival
because his is considered by many to be the most beautiful roman typeface
ever produced. For an italic model, Adobe turned to the genius of Ludovico
degli Arrighi, 16th-century master scribe and typeface designer. Arrighi's
types were adapted to form the perfect companion for the Adobe Jenson
roman design.

An Adobe Originals Multiple Master Typeface

Because it is a multiple master typeface that combines the best qualities
of classic design with state-of-the- art font technology, Adobe Jenson
provides designers with flexibility and power rarely found in digital
type. Adobe Jenson includes axes for weight and optical size which allows
users to fine tune type to their specific needs. For greatly improved
readability, designers can generate fonts that are optically adjusted for
a full range of point sizes from small to large. Also a broad selection of
weights can be set to meet particular tastes or design specifications. The
result is a full range of text sizes that are clear and easy to read, and
display sizes that look refined and elegant.

Adobe Jenson also incorporates intermediate master designs to better
control typographic features throughout the full range of point sizes and
to maintain fidelity to Jenson's original type, which was cut in only a
single point size. The ability to include intermediate master designs is
an important advance in the continued development of Type 1 multiple
master font technology.

New Typeface Packages

The Adobe Jenson Multiple Master Typeface Family

Adobe Jenson package (#400) includes roman and italic multiple master
fonts, as well as the Jenson specimen book. Adobe Jenson Expert package
(#401) includes roman and italic expert multiple master fonts as well as
swash capitals, alternate letters and ornaments for truly professional
quality typography. Both packages include predefined primary fonts for
regular, semibold and bold weights in eight, 12 and 72 point sizes. In
addition to the predefined primary fonts, Adobe Jenson includes the Font
Creator utility, found in all Adobe multiple master packages, so designers
can generate an unlimited selection of weights and optical sizes of type.

The Bulmer and Bulmer Expert packages (#402 and #403) feature beautiful yet
practical faces with slightly condensed letter forms and bracketed serifs.
Bulmer works well as a display typeface because of its high contrast and
distinctive letter shapes. As a text face, it adds elegance to any page.
In combination with its expert set, Bulmer can be used for text settings
of virtually any subject, from novels to mathematical treatises.

The Eccentric et al collection (#404) offers three distinctive
designs--Eccentric, Isabella and Raphael. An all-capital, narrow-bodied
face, Eccentric has a wide range of display uses, from playbills to
fashion advertisements. With its unmistakable 19th-century
characteristics--swirls, loops and surprising letter shapes--Isabella is a
natural for display situations that demand high drama. Raphael exhibits
period design elements with very wide letter strokes offset by hairlines
and is easily identified by the swashes that curve over the tops of the
capitals. Raphael adds flash to advertisements, stationary and business
cards.

Ocean Sans (#405) is a two-axis multiple master typeface that ranges from
normal to extended in width, and light to extra bold in weight from
Monotype. It has a large x-height with resulting short ascenders and
descenders. As a multiple master typeface, it performs well in innumerable
typesetting situations, and is ideal for magazines and other publications
that must adhere to predefined copyfitting layouts.
