Adobe Ships FrameViewer 5 and Retrieval Tools

FrameMaker Companion Products Add New Platforms and Viewing and Search
Features

Mountain View, Calif. (February 13, 1996) (Nasdaq:ADBE)--Adobe Systems
Incorporated today began shipping Adobe FrameViewer 5, the next generation
on-line viewing tool for Adobe FrameMaker and Adobe FrameMaker+SGML
documents. Adobe FrameViewer 5 adds new features such as a QuickAccess
Bar, annotation capabilities and FluidView, which allows text to flow
continu-ously within a viewing window as the window is resized. In
addition to versions for Apple Macintosh and Power Macintosh, Microsoft
Windows, SunOS/Solaris and Hewlett-Packard HP/UX, FrameViewer 5 supports
Adobe FrameMaker's new availability for IBM AIX, Digital UNIX and IRIX.

Concurrent with the release of FrameViewer 5, Adobe is introducing
FrameViewer Retrieval Tools, a separate product that provides a tool kit
for developers to create extensive search capabilities for collections of
electronic FrameMaker documents.

On an increasing basis, Fortune 1000 companies are reaping the benefits of
FrameMaker's on-line viewing technology. As an example, Quantum
Corporation, the world's largest manufacturer of hard disks, recently
replaced its repair facility's cumbersome paper documentation system for
repair technicians with a dynamic on-line system (DocuNet) based on Adobe
FrameViewer software and the Frame Developer's Kit (FDK) .

"We chose the combination of Adobe FrameMaker, FrameViewer and FDK because
they were the best tools for authoring, distribution and integration,"
said David Nelson, MIS Project Manager for Quantum and the project's
leader. According to Nelson, the DocuNet viewing system "would not have
been possible" without Adobe FrameViewer and FDK which allows Quantum to
"easily maintain current repair documentation around the globe."

Adobe FrameViewer Overview

Adobe FrameViewer software allows users to distribute FrameMaker documents
across computing platforms quickly and flexibly. With InstantView
technology, any Adobe FrameMaker or Adobe FrameMaker+SGML document can be
opened--without any processing or conversion--on all platforms supported
by Adobe FrameViewer 5. Indexes and tables of contents in FrameMaker
docu-ments automatically become hypertext links in FrameViewer; navigating
publications on-line is as simple as clicking on these links.

Adobe FrameViewer is easily customized by adding cross-platform Application
Programming Inter-face (API) plug-in modules using the Frame Developer's
Kit. As an example, users can offer alterna-tive versions of a single
document--such as a manual with instructions that vary according to a
user's skill level--by adding an API module that hides or reveals
conditional text. Version 5 New Features

Adobe FrameViewer 5 features the new QuickAccess Bar, a tool bar that
provides function icons for common tasks, including magnification,
copying, navigation and adding annotations and bookmarks. FrameViewer 5's
new annotation feature enables users to personalize Adobe FrameViewer
documents with their own bookmarks and notes, marked "Private" for
personal reference, or "Public" to share with coworkers. To make documents
easier to read on a computer monitor, the new FluidView provides users
with continuous text flow as they resize the viewing window.

FrameViewer Retrieval Tools

The new Adobe FrameViewer Retrieval Tools, sold separately to developers as
an add-on to FrameMaker and FrameViewer, provide powerful API clients that
extend the functionality of FrameViewer to provide cross-document,
full-text search capabilities with large document collections. With Adobe
FrameViewer Retrieval Tools, document authors can build and interactively
validate search index databases. Users can then search across multiple
document groups and collections using keywords or Boolean expressions. The
Search History feature keeps a record of searches accessible for future
reference. When the desired documents are found, FrameViewer enables the
user to view them instantly.
