3Com Raises Stakes In Remote Access Security -- AccessBuilder Remote Access
Server First To Ship With Complete Windows NT Support

January 29, 1996 -- SANTA CLARA, CALIF., -- Following on the success of its
ISDN remote access server shipments, 3Com Corporation (NASDAQ: COMS)
raised the stakes once again by beginning shipment of its Windows NT
security package for the AccessBuilder 4000 and AccessBuilder 2000 remote
access servers. With 3Com's AccessBuilder Security-WinNT services, network
managers now have the first enterprise and branch office solution which
integrates remote access security procedures with the Microsoft Windows NT
network operating system (NOS) Registry Services.

This approach yields a lower cost of ownership and easier network
administration allowing companies to efficiently utilize a single
existing, centralized security database for all remote access and
LAN-based authorization and authentication requests; requests which can
typically number around 6000 in a 24-hour period. Additional benefits
include:

* Minimized risk of human or administrative errors
* No manual replication of the NOS user database to a less
  secure computer
* No advanced technical knowledge of UNIX or languages needed

The AccessBuilder Security-WinNT services are tightly integrated with the
Microsoft server administration, event viewer, audit trail, and management
features. 3Com's security is fully interoperable with all desktop and NOS
client software, including Novell 3.x and 4.x, DOS/Windows, Windows for
Workgroups, Windows 95, and Windows NT.

"Certain environments will still require token-based security, but now the
majority of mid- and large-sized companies can use a remote access system
that minimizes the time and expense involved in administering network
security," said Steve Russell, general manager for 3Com's Personal Office
Division. "Through tight integration with Windows NT, we've taken another
step toward making remote access deployment an easier and more
cost-effective decision to make." Windows NT provides network managers
with Department of Defense-level security and powerful administration and
management tools which are based on an easy-to-use NOS platform, enabling
use of the system by personnel at a range of experience levels.

3Com's AccessBuilder remote access server family supports the broadest
security product portfolio in the industry, including Security Dynamics'
ACE/Server, Novell Directory Services (NDS), Novell Bindery Services,
OSF/DCE Security Services, and now Microsoft Windows NT, enabling the
remote access server to fit seamlessly into virtually any central site or
branch office network.
