ZILOG INTRODUCES A NEW DSP CORE WITH PERIPHERALS TO LOWER SYSTEM COSTS

Campbell, Calif.--January 8, 1996--Zilog, Inc. (NYSE:ZLG) today unveiled
its newest DSP core, the Z8946X, which offers a cost- effective
alternative to embedded controllers traditionally used in modems,
telephone answering machines, wireless phones, digital TV, and much more.

"The surge in the DSP market is fueled by declining DSP prices and easier
programming capabilities," said Walter Croce, director of Zilog's DSP
channel. "System designers can now take advantage of the power of DSP for
the high volume computer peripheral and consumer electronics markets.
Zilog's DSP family is positioned to support these mainstream markets."

The 40 MIPS, 16-bit Z89462 device is the first implementation to make use
of this new core. It features microcontroller functions, on-chip
peripherals and a host of DSP software development tools. The device
integrates a bit field unit to manage microcontroller system control
functions and communications through single cycle bit manipulation,
masking and merging.

Peripherals, traditionally found on microcontrollers, such as two 24-bit
timer counters, pulse-width modulators, bit I/O and high speed synchronous
serial ports are integrated on the Z89462 to lower chip costs and reduce
design time and complexity. An on- chip wait state generator eliminates
the need for external hardware.

The Z89462, with 1K words of on-chip program RAM and two 512 word blocks of
on-chip data RAM, implements a Harvard architecture that features an
innovative four-bus memory scheme. Externally, the 64K word program and
data memories can be populated to accommodate applications that are memory
and I/O intensive. The Z89462's two external memory interfaces enable the
processor to fetch a new external program and data word or two new data
values every 25ns cycle.

Zilog's support program addresses design and development issues through a
host of support tools, from system kits and evaluation boards to DSP
microprocessor code.

The Z8946200ZEM in-circuit emulator features an interactive, window-
oriented real-time environment for emulation and debugging. The
Z8946200ZCO evaluation board contains a microcontroller, a monitor program
and on-board memory. A suite of software support tools includes an
assembler/linker, a C-Compiler and a simulator/debugger to generate and
debug code.

In a 100-pin PQFP surface mount package, the Z89462 is available for $11.00
in 50K quantities.
