Mathematica Link to Microsoft Word

January 24, 1996 -- Wolfram Research today introduced Mathematica Link for
Microsoft Word, an innovative technology that turns Word into an extensive
environment for doing mathematical calculations and creating impressive
technical reports and live interactive presentations. Seamlessly
connecting the powerful computing engine of Mathematica to the globally
standardized interface of Microsoft Word, this link allows users to
combine text, live calculations, and graphics using the advanced text
processing and layout features of Word.

Users simply enter calculations in their Word documents, then the
Mathematica engine invisibly evaluates them and the results appear in that
same Word document. This greatly increases productivity because users no
longer have to switch back and forth between programs or copy and paste
equations from one program to another. However, Todd Gayley, the Wolfram
Research developer of Mathematica Link for Microsoft Word, said the impact
of this release is much deeper and more far reaching than just working in
one application.

"This link embeds the interactive computing power of Mathematica into the
feature-rich, text-processing power of Microsoft Word," Gayley said. "With
these two powerhouses, users can create amazing, high-quality technical
reports with columns of text and graphics."

Users can also take advantage of Word's easy-to-use macro language,
WordBasic, to create new interface elements such as custom dialog boxes,
toolbars of common functions, and unique on-screen forms with buttons and
pop-up menus.

"Programs can easily be written to create buttons and pop-up menus for
users' reports," Gayley said. "For example, an engineer can create a
report with interactive buttons that bring up Mathematica-created
information. This file can then be shared with coworkers, who can access
the layers of information by simply clicking on a button."

Other capabilities of Mathematica Link for Microsoft Word include the
ability to edit existing calculations; import existing Mathematica
notebooks directly into Word; flow text around Mathematica calculations
and graphics in more than one column; add text, arrows, and call- out
boxes; use Word's comprehensive spell and grammar checks; create indexes;
and hide or delete all Mathematica inputs, outputs, or prompts to create a
publication-ready manuscript.

Price and Availability

Mathematica Link for Microsoft Word is priced at $129 and requires
Microsoft Word Version 6 or later on either Macintosh, Power Macintosh,
Windows 3.1, Windows 95, or Windows NT. Power Macintosh and Microsoft
Windows users need Mathematica Version 2.2.2 or higher. For all other
platforms, Mathematica Version 2.2 or higher is required. For further
information or to purchase Mathematica for OpenVMS, contact Wolfram
