UB Networks and Tut Systems

Washington, DC - January 23, 1995 - UB Networks, Inc. and Tut Systems, Inc.
announced today that UB Networks will implement Tut's ATM-over-
copper-wire technology in its GeoSwitch 155. This potentially saves
customers tens of thousands of dollars by allowing customers to deploy
high-speed ATM on their existing building wiring, without upgrading.

UB Networks continues to provide the most affordable ATM solutions by
allowing GeoSwitch to run at full 155 Mbps over Category 3 unshielded
twisted pair (UTP) copper wire, the most popular category of copper
cabling installed for local area networks (LANs). Previously, ATM-
to-the-desktop was only available over the more expensive Category 5 UTP,
or the even costlier fiber-optic cable. ATM via UTP/3 offers the
advantages of being a less expensive, more efficient, and reliable
technology than other proposed ATM UTP transmission technologies. UB
Networks, as a principal member and vice chair of the ATM Forum Technical
Committee, will also be proposing this approach to the ATM Forum for
industry standardization.

The agreement calls for Tut Systems to integrate two different versions of
their transceivers into UB Networks' ATM product line. One version of the
ATM via UTP/3 transceivers will be integrated in UB Network's GeoSwitch
155, while the other will be incorporated into UB Networks' product line
of ATM adapters.

"This is yet another affirmation by UB Networks to make ATM affordable and
easily deployable, with minimal disruption to their existing network
operations," said Tyrone Pike, senior vice president and general manager,
Network Services Division of UB Networks. "We had already set an
aggressive pricepoint for ATM with our GeoSwitch (at $995 per port) and
GeoRim/E (less than $500 per port) products. Today, as a result of this
agreement with Tut, our customers can now run high-speed ATM over cabling
that is used mostly for Ethernet and token-ring LANs, providing them with
the most cost-effective ATM solution that bridges the gap between the
applications of today and the applications of tomorrow."

"We are extremely pleased to have our first strategic agreement with an
industry leader the caliber of UB Networks," said Sal D'Auria, president
and CEO of Tut Systems. "With Tut's breakthrough ATM technology a nd UB's
extensive resources worldwide, this agreement sets the stage for explosive
growth for both companies. The ability of our two companies to combine
technology and products at an affordable price will accelerate the
delivery of ATM to the desktop computer user."

UB Networks, Inc. is a leading, worldwide supplier of network hardware
products and is a pioneer in the area of distributed network management
solutions. As part of its Access/Anywhere strategy, the company offers a
full line of enterprise wide networking products including the Access/One
enterprise hub, Access/Workgroup family, Access/ATM and Access/Management.
The company is ISO 9001 certified and employs over 1100 people in over 70
locations around the world. Headquartered in Santa Clara, California, UB
Networks is a wholly-owned and independently operated subsidiary of Tandem
Computers (NYSE:TDM).

Tut Systems, Inc. is an innovative provider of cost-effective, high-
bandwidth connectivity products. The company has developed a powerful set
of patented communications technologies that enable the implementation of
powerful applications using inexpensive, copper wire. Tut first began
shipping LAN products based on this patented technology in January, 1992 -
the XL series of products, which overcame the distance barriers of
Ethernet transmission over ordinary copper wire. The company subsequently
introduced Silver Streak, the industry's first do-it-yourself family of
Ethernet LANs.

Tut's technology is now being applied to emerging industry standards for
Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM). By continuing to take advantage of its
significant patent library, Tut is participating in the marketplace of
convergence where the telephone carriers and cable providers will use the
infrastructure to bring multimedia applications to homes, businesses and
schools. The company sells its products through distributors, catalog
companies and resellers worldwide.
