Internet Connections Pose New Threats for Business Computer Networks; Trend
Micro Devices Offers Solution

Cupertino, CA, Jan. 25, 1996 Trend Micro Devices today made public
information about a computer networking security threat they claim has
immediate potential to cause severe data loss in Local Area Network (LAN)
environments where computers have Internet access. The information report,
"Viruses and the Internet" is available free of charge via the World-Wide
Web at http://www.trendmicro.com, and it teaches readers about this new
threat while introducing Trend's InterScan VirusWall software, a
first-of-its-kind software product that seals off this "back door" in
LAN/Internet security.

A 1995 study of Fortune 1,000 MIS personnel by McGuire Research Services
revealed viruses are the greatest threat to information security in a
company, causing more worry than human error, hackers or even disgruntled
employees. In fact, any company with workstations connected to the
Internet through a LAN is at risk. Even the most highly-effective
anti-virus software for catching viruses in network traffic simply cannot
detect viruses in Internet traffic, which moves through a different route,
bypassing LAN- based anti-virus software.

THE RISK: The Internet is the world's largest unprotected LAN, a breeding
ground for viruses and other malicious code. The "Gateway" is the open
door on a LAN that moves data from the Internet to workstations inside the
company. Gateways are simply data movers; they do not monitor or restrict
the traffic in any way. Thus, viruses can easily travel undetected through
the gateway as e-mail attachments, World- Wide Web downloads or FTP
transfers (a method of downloading files from other computers).

THE PROTECTION: Trend Micro Devices' "InterScan VirusWall" works at the
gateway, monitoring the data moving through it. When it recognizes a
sequence of bytes unique to a virus, it grabs the file and puts it in an
isolated location where system administrators can examine the data and
destroy it if necessary.

THE RESULT: With the gateway under constant monitoring, traffic is
protected from all known viruses. Companies eliminate a major threat to
the security of their network while banishing destructive programs from
their LANs. Employees experience less down-time, less data loss and higher
confidence in their computers.

"Viruses and the Internet" describes this threat and solution in much
greater detail for system administrators and other people responsible for
network security.

Companies concerned about this new security threat are advised to have
their system administrators download a copy of this free report.
